Hunter raised a brow, his intense gaze focused on Mia's face. Was this her idea?
Meeting his gaze head-on, Mia's eyes were clear and resolute. "I never had that in mind!" She knew that with Mr. Jasper Sr.'s remarks, Hunter would assume this was her doing.
When they first married three years ago, she had dreamed of making their marriage public, letting the world know she was Hunter Jasper's wife. She had loved him then and wanted everyone to know they were together.
But on their wedding night, he had coldly said, "I don't want anyone to know about this marriage. Keep it to yourself." Then, he had left, and he hadn't come back that night.
Since then, she had never considered announcing their marriage. Now, as she prepared to divorce him, she had no desire to publicize a relationship that was soon to end. At least that way, they would both have a little dignity left.
"What do you mean, you've never thought about it?" Mr. Jasper Sr. cut in. "Mia, you're the real Mrs. Jasper. What's wrong with introducing yourself to everyone? Hunter, either have your assistant give Mia a tour of the company, or do it yourself and make it clear who she is." "Alright," Hunter replied coldly.
Mr. Jasper Sr. shot Miaa look of encouragement. "Go on!"
Reluctantly, Mia shook her head, but Mr. Jasper Sr. just glared at her with frustration. "If you don't make your presence known, other women will just see it as an opportunity to move in!"
Mia had always been kindhearted. No wonder she often ended up being overshadowed.
"Mrs. Jasper, let's go," Hunter said, reaching out to take Mia's hand, his tone unexpectedly gentle.
For a brief moment, Mia felt a flicker of confusion, as if the man in front of her actually cared for her. Caught off guard, she stood still, staring at him.
Seeing her dazed expression, Hunter didn't say anything more. He simply held her hand firmly and led her forward without hesitation.
Behind them, Mr. Jasper Sr. watched, feeling content as he enjoyed his treat and thought about how well they suited each other.
Hunter led her straight into a conference room, closed the door, and quickly pinned her against it. His gaze was sharp, his voice laced with irritation. "Mia, cut the act with me. Trying to use Grandpa to push your agenda? That only works if I agree!"
In his mind, Mia had maneuvered herself into his life three years ago, forcing him into this marriage. From the start, he saw her as someone with endless schemes. He had never wanted their marriage to be public, not wanting her to use her title as Mrs. Jasper to her advantage.
The sting in Mia's chest was sharp, her face paling as she struggled to speak, her voice trembling. "Is that what you think? No matter what I say or do, you always think I'm after something? Hunter, I don't expect you to love me, but can you at least stop assuming the worst of me?
"Whatever happened that night wasn't my fault, and I never asked you to marry me! You're the one who insisted. If you hadn't, maybe I'd be with someone who actually loves me by now, living a happy life instead of exhausting myself every day at work, only to come home and serve you!
"We've been married for three years, Hunter. Even a dog would have warmed up by now. And yet, you're still as cold to me as you were the day we married."
Her voice broke with frustration as she continued, "If you want to be with Jenna, I'll step aside. I'm willing to divorce. Just let me go. Stop making my life a living hell."
Her words cut deep, bringing painful memories of the past three years rushing back. The only feeling left was bitter irony. Even a stone would warm eventually, but Hunter seemed beyond reach.
Hearing her mention that night three years ago, Hunter's control snapped. He grabbed her wrist, dragging her toward him, and threw her onto the conference table with force.
