CHAPTER 27
I'm hired? Kira couldn't believe it.
Frankly, Paul couldn't believe it, either.
But the boss' order was clear.
"Yes, you're hired,' he said with a nod and a smile..
A thought suddenly occurred to Kira.
Did someone tell you to give me the job? she blurted.
She couldn't be blamed for thinking that way.
Just the day before, she had approached Austyn.
But she got side-tracked before she could broach the subject. From NôvelDrama.Org.
Then the HR manager from Austyn's company called her today.
Throughout the interview, she could tell Paul wasn't impressed by her resume or her dress code.
But he offered her the job on the spot.
If it wasn't for Austyn's intercession on her behalf, why else would she be picked over all the other candidates?
As Mr Spock said, it was only logical.
"Miss Hewitt, Paul looked appropriately solemn and said with a straight face, 'the decision to hire you is based entirely on considerations of merit and potential. I've judged you to be the right fit for our company. We believe you'll be a valuable asset to the M Group." Kira left the office building in a daze.
Giana was not here, so she had to pinch herself.
She stared at the crescent-shaped marks on her wrist, made by her nails, and still couldn't believe it.
The interview had been... surreal.
Did she really just get the job?
It was like waking up to find the pie had dropped out of the sky and fallen into her lap.
"Lady Luck must have smiled on me today."
She had thought the bus accident earlier was a bad omen.
She was glad to be proven wrong.
Ah, the look on the other candidates' faces when they knew Kira had got the job!
The newest recruit of the M Group couldn't help it as the corners of her mouth turned up in a smug smile.
And to have done it without Austyn's help!
Kira gave herself a metaphorical pat on the back.
She had her suspicions, but the HR manager made it very clear he was the one who decided to hire her. Maybe he saw something in her she didn't.
Kira allowed herself a big-headed moment as she thought of the manager pegging her as a hidden gem. She was grinning ear from ear.
Passersby gave her strange looks as the girl did a little cha-cha dance right there on the pavement.
Kira fantasised about her first day at the M Group.
Not going to make the same mistake twice, she would show up dressed to the nines.
She went through her wardrobe in her mind and fretted about the lack of choices
Maybe it was time to do some shopping.
Kira checked the bus route to the hospital on her phone.
She couldn't wait to tell her father the good news.
He would be thrilled for his little girl.
Lost in her pleasant thoughts, Kira didn't notice she was being followed.
The man had his eyes on her backpack, slung over one shoulder.
He darted a look around before quickly closing the distance between Kira and him.
He gave her a rough shove from behind before taking off.
Kira lost her balance and almost fell.
An arm shot out and helped her to her feet.
"Are you okay?" a man's voice asked.
Kira collected herself. Thank you, I'm-'
Realising what happened, she shouted, "He stole my backpack!
She ran after the thief.
Maybe she'd started celebrating too soon.
To be mugged in broad daylight!
What were the odds?
Her backpack wasn't worth much, but her wallet was in there.
It had all her money and her ID card.
'Get back here!
Adrenaline spurred her on.
She knew it was dangerous to go after a mugger by herself.
The man could be armed.
But Kira would rather be stabbed than lose her money.
'Bastard, stop!"
Kira was soon panting.
She slowed down.
The man ran like a gazelle.
A sharp pain stabbed her in the side.
Kira doubled over, gasping for breath.
H
"Wait here. I'll go get your backpack." A man's voice said as the figure sprinted past her..
Kira struggled to raise her head.
The voice sounded familiar.
It was the same man who helped her up earlier.
Did she run into a Good Samaritan?
Kira didn't have the time to ponder her roller coaster ride of luck today.
She set off after the man as soon as she caught her brea
