Chapter 27
Chapter 27
Lucy was in the midst of reading the financial report for the current quarter when Kylah called her.
"What's up?" Lucy pressed the phone to her ear with her shoulder and quickly made a bookmark on the report.
The costs had kept on increasing recently, and she needed to speak to the relevant departments soon.
"Lucy, remember to act like an engaged couple with Maddox whenever Arthur's around!" Kylah dropped a bomb on her.
When she finished telling Lucy what had happened, Lucy looked as though she was ill.
She was afraid that Kylah would cause trouble, so she didn't tell her who had slapped her. Who knew, Kylah had rushed right up to Arthur!
Now that Arthur thought she was about to get married to Maddox, she didn't know what he would do!
"Hey, Lucy? Are you not getting any signal? Why aren't you talking?" Kylah smacked her phone and muttered, "I just bought this phone. It's not broken, is it..."
"Your phone is fine. Babe, don't spew nonsense around Arthur next time. You'll get into trouble! I have urgent business to attend to, bye!"
Lucy hung up, but she wasn't in the mood to read the financial report anymore.
Arthur's possessiveness was out of this world. He didn't allow her to contact other guys even when he
didn't care about her.
Now...
She rubbed her forehead and felt a massive headache. Regardless how serious the rift between her and Arthur, she shouldn't involve other people.
Lucy put the financial report aside. After thinking for a while, she picked up her phone and sent Arthur a text——
"I have something to discuss with you. Are you free at noon?"
She got an instant reply——
"I'm free to have a meal but not to talk."
Lucy frowned. She didn't want to have too much to do with Arthur. However, with the current situation, Maddox would be affected if she didn't explain things to Arthur.
After thinking for a while, she sent him another text— Text content © NôvelDrama.Org.
"Then are you free to have lunch at noon? Fresco Diner, 12 o'clock."
She got no reply even after thirty minutes had passed. She didn't know if he hadn't read her text or if this was a direct rejection.
Lucy picked up her phone and looked at the time. It was already half past eleven. She hesitated for a moment, but grabbed her handbag and left.
From what she remembered, Arthur was a very stubborn and determined person. He would never give up until he reached his goal. Now that he wanted to reconcile with her, he would show up...right?
She took a cab to Fresco Diner. The moment Lucy walked in, a waiter greeted her, "Are you Ms. Morgan?"
She took a cab to Fresco Diner. The moment Lucy walked in, a waiter greeted her, "Are you Ms. Morgan?"
"Yes."
"Mr. Johnson is upstairs. Please come with me."
Lucy was slightly shocked. Arthur had arrived before her?
The waiter led her upstairs towards a VIP room and opened the door. "This way, please."
"Thank you." Lucy pursed her lips slightly and walked inside.
Arthur was sitting to the left side of the door. When she went in, he was looking through some documents with his head bent.
"I'll be done soon!" He took a quick glance at her, signed the document, and tossed it to Max, his assistant, behind him. Then, he asked the waiter for the menu.
Lucy looked at the thick stack of documents with a complicated expression. "If you were busy, you could have come later."
"You used to wait for me, but now, I'll wait for you," Arthur said naturally and passed her the menu.
The old Lucy would have been so thrilled to hear him say something like that, but the present Lucy only thought it sounded ironic.
He hadn't appreciated her when he should have, so why act all loving now?
Lucy looked at the menu and ordered some food he liked to eat.
Every time she ordered a dish, Arthur's eyes would shine brighter. It seemed like she had always remembered his preferences.
"Arthur," Lucy said after all the waiters had left. "I'm not the old me anymore, and you're not the old you. We spent five years in peace, and I hope we can keep that peace going."
Her not hating him was the kindest gesture she could muster!
The light in Arthur's eyes grew dimmer and dimmer. His expression became icy. "Are you so anxious to distance yourself from me because of Maddox Pate?"
"I've already told you that Maddox and I are just ordinary friends." They were no longer in a relationship, and she didn't like his interrogative tone.
Arthur sneered and slapped his palm against the table. "Would ordinary friends kiss?!"
At that moment, some waiters filed in to serve the food.
Lucy pursed her lips and waited for the waiters to leave before saying, "I didn't kiss Maddox."
"I saw it with my own eyes!" Arthur went to her and looked down at her, his eyes bloodshot. "Lucy, do you think I'm that naïve?"
Was she lying to him because she was afraid he would teach Maddox a lesson?
Did she really like Maddox that much?
Did she really like Maddox that much?
"I've already said my part. It's up to you whether you want to listen! You're impossible!" Lucy wanted to eat a parting meal with him, but he would never fail to piss her off!
She stood up and walked out holding her handbag.
Arthur caught up to her with large strides. He grabbed her wrist and said through gritted teeth, "Did I say you could leave?"
"Arthur, can you not be so bossy and selfish?" Lucy fought back tears and said in a nasal voice, "You wanted me to divorce you so badly, so now I've signed the divorce papers. What else do you want?"
He was the one who wanted a divorce and also the one who wanted a reconciliation. Did Lucy have to
be his plaything for her entire life?
"You!" Arthur's eyes were red, and he raised his fist.
Lucy accepted her fate and closed her eyes. A slap on her left cheek and a punch on her right would balance things perfectly!
Bang!
Arthur smashed his fist into the wall. Blood streamed down his slender fingers and dripped onto the floor, forming a pool.
He couldn't bear to hit her or scold her, so what should he do with her?!
Lucy opened her eyes and saw the bloodstains. She blinked for a while, but when she looked up, her expression was unchanged. "Can I go now?"
"Ms. Morgan, I remember you saying that you hate wasting food. Since you've ordered quite a lot of dishes, I think you'd better eat before leaving." Max spoke up before he could.
Arthur glanced at her coldly and went back to his seat, looking very intimidating.
Lucy looked at the drops of blood on the floor, pursed her lips, and couldn't help but say, "Look for a first-aid kit and help him bandage his wound."
If someone else was hurt, she would have said the same thing.
"Okay." Max came back shortly with a first-aid kit and squatted down in front of Arthur.
Arthur's expression was stony, and he didn't make it easy for Max to bandage his wound. He would glance subtly at Lucy from time to time.
"Ms. Morgan, I can't bandage Mr. Johnson's wound well. Could you be so kind to do it for him?" Max was well-aware of Arthur's thoughts.
Lucy turned to look at Arthur as he coincidentally looked at her too.
When their eyes met, Arthur felt as if a fire had ignited in him. He quickly turned around and pretended to observe his hand.
