Chapter 22
Miles glanced at May for the umpteenth time, unable to concentrate on work no matter how much he tried to. Having this woman around him had become a therapy he never knew he needed all these years. She was everything cute, his peace of mind lies in her. She was everything he ever wanted in a woman.
“Am I just going to sit here and do nothing?” May asked, pulling him back to reality, and he turned his face away.
“Yes. You can take a walk around if you become bored,” He replied to her, and she briefly sighed. This was no different from staying in that boring house all day.
“You don’t have any files you want to sort out?” She asked as she stood from the sofa where she was seated, and went to sit on the chair across from him.
“I can help with that,” She further said.
“No, I don’t. If you are bored, you can take a walk around the company,” He replied to her, and she nodded.
Silence crept into the atmosphere and Miles was busy working that he didn’t spare her a glance. He was doing his best not to get distracted, especially now that she was sitting close to him. If only she knew the effect she had on him, then she wouldn’t come anywhere close to him else he would lose his self-control.
“I should’ve just stayed at home,” She mumbled and rolled her eyes.
“I should go get coffee then,” She stood up from the chair and uttered.
“Coffee is not safe for you in your condition,” He stated, and she paused. Her jaw dropped to the ground as she stared into space, her eyes narrowed.
“Wh… what do you mean by that?” She turned to him and asked, her heart pounding hard against her chest. Hope he didn’t find out about her pregnancy. She thought to herself.
“Coffee has caffeine, and that is not good for your health. Ulcer patients shouldn’t take caffeine,” She breathed out in relief when he explained to her.
“I really want to drink something,” She whined subconsciously as she sat back on the couch, and Miles stared at her. She looked so freaking cute, and the way she pouted her lips made him want to kiss her, but he quickly dismissed the thought.Material © NôvelDrama.Org.
Miles reached for the office telephone and dialed a number. He waited for whoever he called to answer the phone, and after a few minutes, a feminine voice sounded from the other end.
“Yes, Boss,” Came the feminine voice.
“Come in,” Miles briefly said on the phone and dropped it back on the desk.
“I’ll ask my secretary to get you a smoothie. I think that would be better,” He stated, and she briefly sighed.
“Am I going to drink smoothie all the time? I’ve not had any other drink except a smoothie for some time now,” Again, she whined as she pouted her lips, and Miles bit his bottom lip. He was restraining himself so hard from doing something stupid, but she wasn’t helping matters at all.
“We… we will go to the hospital later for a medical check-up and see what can be done,” He tried not to stutter, but his voice came out weakly. His heart kept beating fast and rapid, and his breath hitched momentarily.
A knock sounded on the door, and he ushered the person in. His secretary walked inside.
“Boss, you asked to see me,” She bowed.
“Hmm. Get me two glasses of strawberry smoothie…” He paused, then looked over to May.
“Do you need anything else aside from that, wife?” He asked, not forgetting to add ‘wife’, maybe he was trying to show her off in front of someone, she had no idea. Well, she liked the sound of that, anyway.
“Fried chicken…”
“You can’t have that. Go for something else,” He cut her off, and she huffed frustratingly.
“Fatty meat…”
“You can’t have that either,” He cuts her off again, and she rolled her eyes angrily.
“I don’t know… Just the smoothie is fine with me then,” She mumbled, and he turned to the secretary.
“Two glasses of strawberry smoothie it is,”
“Sir, I still have something to take care of in the office. I’m yet to sort out the file you asked me to,” The young lady uttered politely.
“So?”
“So… Uhm… I was thinking you should look for someone else to go get it for her, or maybe she can go get it herself. It’s just across from the street,” The young lady uttered politely, and he scoffed.
“Natalie, what did you say?” Miles’s face darkened all of a sudden as he threw Natalie a murderous glare that left every ounce of confidence in her breaking into pieces.
“Uhm… Boss, I was…” She paused and bit her bottom lip.
“I’m busy, Boss. That’s why…”
“You can’t get something for my wife because you are busy?” He scoffed unbelievably as he stood up. His blood boiled in fury, his throat burned down to his stomach, and slowly, he clenched his fingers into tight fists as he stared into space.
“Sir, I was just…”
“Don’t worry, I will go get it myself,” May rose to her feet and quickly spoke up. She knew from the moment she stepped into this office that this young lady didn’t like her, but she had no idea why. Causing trouble was the last thing she wanted.
“Sit, May!” He ordered coldly without even looking in her direction.
“Miles… You need to calm down,” May tried to calm him. This was the real Miles she knew. This was who he was. Has he been deceiving her all this while by being nice to her? She asked herself, but that wasn’t necessary now.
“This is between me and my secretary, May. Can you please stay out of it?” He tried as much as to be polite with her even though he was burning inside.
“You know what, Natalie?” He paused then took a deep breath as he threw his head back.
“You are fired! Get your things from that office and get yourself out of the company for good!” He finally slammed his hands on the desk, and May flinched fearfully.
“Si… Sir… I didn’t mean to. I will go get it for her…”
“I don’t want to repeat myself, Natalie. The security guard will escort you out if you are not going to leave by yourself…”
“It hasn’t gotten to this yet, Miles. You don’t have to fire her,” May tried to speak to him, but the murderous glare he threw her made her flinch and her heart missed a beat as fear gripped her.
“Sir, please…” Natalie went on her knees and cried out. She had just gotten this job less than one week after spending the last few months of her life job hunting. She couldn’t afford to lose her job now.
“Miles… Please reconsider your decision…”
“I told you to stay out of this, May! Don’t push me!” He finally lost it and raised his voice at her, and she cringed. Miles has not changed but has just been pretending. What was she thinking? That he would ever change just because they were together now?
“You were just his contracted wife, how could you think so highly of yourself?” May’s subconscious mind reminded her, and her eyes glistened with tears as she stared back at Miles…
