Chapter 29
Miles’s heart pounded hard against his chest like it was going to explode soon. His throat went dry and he swallowed nothing as he blinked his eyes. His finger in her warm mouth was supposed to help him relieve the pain he wasn’t even feeling in the first place, but fuck it! Why was he feeling aroused instead? He asked himself and slowly bit his inner lip.
May was lost staring into his eyes, and for a moment, she asked herself why she did that. Why did she suddenly do that? Why was she so worried about him that he would get hurt? In the end, she couldn’t come up with anything.
“Uhm…” She quickly let go of his hand and stepped away from him.
“Uhm… I will wait outside…” May quickly grabbed a bottle of water from the counter and turned to rush out of the kitchen, but he held her hand and pulled her back.
“I’m sorry about what happened earlier… I didn’t mean to get mad at you… And at the office… I was just pissed that Natalie looked down on you. I didn’t mean to treat you that way” May’s jaw dropped to the ground as she stared back at him wordlessly. Although she knew that Miles had been full of surprises lately, but that was something she didn’t expect to hear from him. He was a grumpy man and it’s crazy how he was being like this.
“May…” He placed his hands on her shoulders and swallowed nothing.
“While we are married, can you please stop seeing other men? I mean, stop hanging out with other men. I don’t feel comfortable with you being around…”
“Remember this is an open contract marriage where we could see anyone. It’s not like we are married for real,” She cut him off and mumbled the last part and shrugged. Those words pierced through Miles’s heart, and he bit his lips.
“May…”
“I don’t want such a thing repeating itself in the future. You have no reason to prevent me from seeing another man,” She rolled her eyes and crossed her arms on her chest.
“I have every reason, May…”
“Then what’s your reason? Can you tell me?” She demanded, and he bit his lip.
“If I tell you that I love you, will you believe me? I don’t like seeing you with another man. It makes my heart ache,” He stared into her eyes and said to himself.
“Are you not going to say anything?” She raised her eyebrows, but he just forced a smile and stepped away from her.
“Well, as for what happened earlier in the office, I’m not pissed. I should learn not to cross my boundaries henceforth,” She rolled her eyes and crossed her arms on her chest.
“You should wait for me in the dining room. I will join you soon with the food,” He turned to continue what he was doing.
“Hmm…” May finally walked out of the kitchen and breathed out in relief as she slumped on the dining chair.Property © NôvelDrama.Org.
May waited in the dining room for a few more minutes and by the time Miles walked into the dining room, it was past 2:30am.
“Your food is ready. Here you go,” Miles carefully placed the plates of food on the table and served her.
“Thank you,” She smiled at him excitedly, and he nodded.
“You are not going to eat?” May raised her eyebrows as she looked at him, and he scoffed.
“No, I’m not hungry. I will eat later,” He replied to her, and she nodded.
May slowly munched on the food and she couldn’t help but admit that it was delicious. How could he cook so well?
“This is delicious. Who taught you how to cook?” May was forced to ask out of curiosity.
“I’m glad you like it. I grew up with my brother alone, so I didn’t have a choice but to learn how to cook,” He shrugged, and she slowly nodded.
“Wow!” She mouthed.
May took her time to eat and after she was done, Miles offered to clear the table.
“Are you going back to sleep?” He asked as he walked into the living room where May was standing.
“Yes… What about you?” She asked as she glanced over to the laptop he left on the center table earlier.
“Not yet. I still have a lot of things to do, so I would have to delay a little,” He tucked his hands inside his pockets.
“You are going to be tired when you wake up later in the day and you might end up being late to work. Why don’t you rest…”
“Don’t worry about me and just go to bed. I will stop working in thirty minutes,” He glanced at the wall clock then looked at her and smiled.
“Do you want me to keep you company? It was my fault your work got delayed, so I should take responsibility for…” Her voice trailed off as he covered the distance between them, and placed his hands on her shoulders. Her heart fluttered, and she swallowed nothing.
“Don’t worry about me and just go to bed. I will be done shortly,” He assured her as he looked into her eyes, and she managed to nod.
“Uh… uhm… I’ll head to the room then,” She stepped away from him and quickly walked away, her heart pumping hard in her chest.
Miles stared at her until she was out of his sight, his lips curled up in a smile.
Minutes later, May walked inside the room and crashed against the wall as she held her chest and breathed out as she had been holding her breath unknowingly.
As the incident that happened earlier replayed in her head, she ran her fingers through her hair. Why did she do that? Has she really fallen for him?
“Impossible! He is not my type,” She muttered, but deep inside her, she knew she was deceiving herself. How could she still lie to herself when her heart only beat rapidly against this man? How could she deny this feeling, the burning desires in her whenever he was around, and the way her heart yearned for his presence? How could she deny that and lie to herself?
“Forget it, May. You will get over it. He is not your type,” Again, she told herself as she dragged herself to the bed and slumped on it tiredly.
May lay on the bed, staring up at the ceiling. A small smile subconsciously curled up her lips at the thought of Miles. The way he cared about her. He was driving her crazy with the things he was doing.
“Ugh! I think I’m losing my mind,” She swung her legs in the air and squeaked as she covered her face.
“Go to bed, May. Don’t think about him,” She whispered as she wrapped herself up with the duvet tightly with her eyes shut while trying to disrupt her thoughts from Miles, and she finally fell asleep after what seemed like forever…
