Chapter 67
Kaia POV
"No...she can't let him mark her." A desperate howl almost leaves his lips, forcing my own body to react with knowing dread.
"Hector?"
"It's an invitation to their marking ceremony..." He places a hand to his forehead that firmly leaves red pressure marks visible when he finally lowers his hand back down. "Why would he send that to you?"
"Because he is toxic..." He snaps at me, and I find myself putting my walls back up. My wolf knowing before me what is inevitably to come.
"...because he wants to show that he has won."
Won...
He thrusts the invitation into my hold and I feel sick just holding it, knowing the textured card has been perfectly designed with their happiness in mind.
His own parents announcing the joyous occasion...their names solidifying the bond they share with her... the bond I never had.
They never even tried. To them I was too argumentative.
My thumb strokes the delicately printed flowers bordered with gold ink as my heart aches. A sick 'reminder of what I will never have.
My mate is finally to mark another. I knew he would, after seeing her in the hospital bed. After hearing of her reawakening. I knew this would come.
Maybe I'm just more prepared than Hector, he has never let go of his plans... of his hopes of saving her.
"Something doesn't add up.." I break out of the hold their actions would reduce me to...tears, spiralling depression.
I've cried enough tears over the Sable Alpha family.

"Why send this....it just doesn't make sense."
"I have to stop it..."
This is the first time I am seeing the madness of the wolf within. The wolf being denied a mate connection.
He is bursting at the seams, desperate to break out of the human form...I can see it in Hector's pacing, as he grabs at his hair, takes steadying deep breaths in...he is trying to calm his wolf. And for once I don't think he will win.
"Hector, you need to calm down. Look... it's not even for another fortnight. You have time."
Is there a part of me that wants to join Hector... that wants to stop this ceremony before it has started? To return back to the Amber Desert pack and claim what is mine...no.
If this is a mental mind game, and Than is guilty of using those against me aplenty, then I am now immune to them.
"She doesn't know what she is doing."
"She does...she knows Hector." I take hold of his hands...pulling them into me. I need to make him see... Than will never give her up. Sometimes it is better to walk away.
For your own sanity... it doesn't make you weak, if anything it makes you stronger. To admit defeat before it completely destroys you.
"She fully knows what she is doing. She knows who he is...you've got to understand...as I do... that we never stood a chance."
The embracing of his hands only pauses his self-harassing movements temporarily. He isn't in the mindset to listen, he has to see it for himself.
That's the only way he will ever learn.
"I have to go...now..." He pulls his hands from out of my hold, why does such a simple movement hurt so much. Like it carried the weight of a thousand knives being stabbed into my chest. "Hector..." I gasp.
"Just stay here....I have to do this...I won't be long."
My wolf growls internally reminding me of what else is a stake here if he goes to her. Not just our own mate connection...but my own safety.
"Hector?" I call after him...if he sees her...he's going to know. He's going to know how ill she is. He's going to fight to save her and the only way to save her is through me... "Hector, it's pointless."
"I have to try Kaia, she's my mate. I can't let her mark him..."
He's frantic...he's in such a state of panic that he can't even find his car keys. Cursing at himself for not being able to find them in his muddled mind.
In his chaotic search objects are thrown to the floor as he searches his office blindly.
I see the car keys, at the edge of his desk. My body blocking them.
I pick them up, turn and let them dangle from a small height. He takes them from me, only pausing for a moment to look into my eyes.
His eye's grey ash deepen in colour, à blackness almost bleeding through...his wolf was forward with him. I can feel my own peeking out, she wants to see his wolf for herself. See his wolf make this choice for himself as well...not just the human side always in control of the fur.
That the fur is in unison with the skin.
"Just stay here..." His parting words are almost inaudible from the banging sound of blood pumping at my ears. My wolf also screaming internally for me to chase after him, to stop him...any way I can. This is it...
When he returns, he will have the same mindset as Than...I will be that donor again.
How do you say goodbye without actually saying the words.
He must see it in my eyes, in my facial expression. But he is too wrapped up in his own emotions, in her... that I am yet again, invisible.
I will never see him again.
