Falling for my Ex-Fiancee’s Best friend

New job..

The whole week felt miserable for Demelza after her encounter with Nathan which made her resort to finding more jobs to do to save up alot of money to free her dad.

Weekend came fast and the sun shone directly on her face as she sat on the dining table with Harriet having scrambled eggs and coffee. Both of them lacked appetite but Demelza insisted they have breakfast no matter how light.

“Did you get any response from the interviews you went for?” Demelza asked Harriet whose mood had been mixed the whole week from waiting for a response from all the interviews she had gone for earlier in the week.

“Nothing yet, D,” Harriet solemnly replied.

“Hmm,” was all Demelza could say as she was also waiting for a response herself.

“How about you?” Harriet asked Demelza whose face was blank.

“Well, same thing. No response yet. Though I was asked to check in on Monday.”

“Sounds hopeful.” Harriet shrugged

Both of them sat in silence until their thoughts were interrupted by the ring of the telephone in the hallway. They wondered who was calling as the phone barely ever rang since her father was taken away. He was the only one who got calls on that telephone.

They sat looking at each other while the phone kept ringing as they were skeptical about picking up the call.

“I’ll get it.” Harriet told Demelza, standing up. She walked to the telephone and picked up the call but stayed mute.

‘Is this the resident of Harriet Thorpes?’ a woman on the other end of the phone asked.

“Yes, who is asking?” Harriet asked being cautious while Demelza had gotten up from the dinning and walked towards the phone so that she would be able to listen to the conversation.

‘This is Martha, the woman whom you had an interview for babysitting’ the woman over the phone introduced herself.

“Oh, yes yes. I remember. Good morning,” Demelza responded, feeling delighted.

‘Well, we found you to be the most appropriate person for the job. How would you like to start on Monday?’ Martha asked Harriet with hope that she would be able to.

“Yes, please. It will be my pleasure to resume work Monday,” Harriet replied excitedly with relief that she would be able to contribute to the expenses of the house and the burden would be a little less on Demelza.

‘Alright then, see you on Monday.’ the woman said in delight.

“Thank you ma’am. Have a great weekend” Harriet said and dropped the telephone line.

Harriet and Demelza both jump for joy as they were happy she got a job.

“I’m happy for you, Harriet, ” Demelza told Harriet with a smiling face.

“Thank you D” Harriet responded, still smiling.

Demelza excused herself immediately she remembered she had to get groceries and also do the laundry.

She went to her room and hastily got dressed to leave for the supermarket.

The weekend passed by faster than Harriet and Demelza thought and it was Monday already.

Harriet dressed up nervously for her new job while Demelza dressed up feeling anxious and hopeful about getting the job.

Over the weekend, every other place she had gone for an interview had called and told her they couldn’t take her which made the restaurant her last option.

She dressed in a very responsible way as she could not risk anything that would make her not get the job.

“Bye D” Harriet said out loud walking out the door.

“Bye,” Demelza responded. “Good luck, alright!” Demelza wished her.

“Thank you,” Harriet responded feeling pleased.

In less than five minutes, Demelza finished dressing up. She locked up the house and hastily took a taxi to the restaurant. The restaurant is quite a distance but it wasn’t bad because it is a safe drive from her house to the restaurant so if at all she got the job, it will always be a safe ride.

After about fifteen minute drive, she finally got to the restaurant. She paid the driver in cash and walked into the building. She looked around and went to the front desk by the corner.

“Good morning, my name is Demelza. I was asked to come this morning.” Demelza introduced herself to the young man seated.

“Oh, good morning. We have been expecting you.” The man replied with a smile resting on his face.

For no particular reason, Demelza could feel shivers run down her spine. She concluded it must be from the anxiety she felt.

“Come with me,” the man told her as he stood up from his chair walking into what seemed like an office area. Demelza followed suit until they got to a door. The man knocked twice and opened the door. As he walked in, Demelza followed him inside. The chills from the Air conditioner slapped her face due to the fact that where she was coming from wasn’t as cool as this.

“Good morning, sir,” Demelza greeted with a little smile on her face.

“Good morning, you must be Demelza,” the man seated in the office asked.

“Yes sir, I am Demelza,” She responded.

“Alright, you can leave us” the man instructed the person who had brought Demelza in.Original from NôvelDrama.Org.

“I am Freddie, I am the manager of the restaurant. I oversee everything and everyone reports to me. I would have called you over the weekend to give you feedback on your interview but I decided to come in person because I already knew you were the person for the job. I just needed to check out your punctuality and you seem to be good.” Freddie commended her which made her smile.

“Thank you, Sir, ” Demelza said, heaving a sigh of relief.

“You will start work right now, and you will work for six hours every day. Six am to twelve pm. This is because I like to make working hours flexible enough for the employees just Incase they want to take shifts and work more hours. If you are interested in shifts, I will add you to the roster from tomorrow. You can give me a reply on that.” Freddie explained to her.

“Alright sir, thank you very much, sir,” Demelza thanked Freddie, unable to hide her excitement.

“You get paid weekly, okay? And for the extra shifts, you will be paid daily. Follow me to get your uniform.” He instructed her standing up.

Demelza followed him immediately and they went to where she was given a uniform. He asked one of the employees to show her around and teach her the basics she needed to know as a waiter.

In about an hour, she was well settled in and she started her job which turned out to be less stressful than she imagined.

Holding a tray of cake and coffee, Demelza comes to a halt after seeing Nathan walk in with a new girl she had never seen him with.

She saw the girl laughing as they walked in with the lady’s hand in Nathan’s hand which made her heart sink. She stood numb as she felt a sting of jealousy dashed through her veins from seeing that lady looking so happy in Nathan’s arms.

And he was smiling too. He never smiled at her before!
