Carol and Agent Z(2)
“Code X, a woman was looking after him. That woman is from the capital and found Agent Z lying in the pool of blood a few hundred meters from the accident site.”
“Woman?” Jenica reached for the binoculars handed to her by the staff and looked into the distance where she noticed a light.
There she saw the familiar figure of Carol as she pretended to light a bonfire. Jenica was stunned for a moment.
What is Carol doing in this freaking place?!
With a frown, she gave the binocular back to her assistant and quickly walked towards her friend who had no idea who’s the man she’s been taking care of. “Carol!” she called, frowning.
The woman jumped in shock and hastily looked over her shoulder to see the one calling her. Carol frowned at first because she couldn’t see clearly the face of the newcomer, but when the light from the bonfire illuminated Jenica’s face, Carol’s eyes widened. “Jenica? Oh my gosh! What are you doing here?!”
Jenica stood in front of Carol and looked at the man lying not far away. Agent Z seemed unconscious and Jenica could smell the faint scent of blood around.
“I should be the one asking you that! What happened? And why are you with that man?”
Carol went silent and after a few moments, her eyes watered and she suddenly burst into tears. “Jenica, you are right! The child in the picture is Sham’s twin. I’ve secured a DNA test with the sample you’ve given me. But…”
Jenica remembered about the child in the picture that her assistant had sent. She couldn’t afford to go to the suburbs of the capital so she sent Carol back to the country and asked her to find the boy. She even gave her friend her DNA sample and now her hunch was right.
The boy was truly one of her sons!
Carol looked for a piece of paper inside her belongings and handed to her the DNA result. Jenica’s hand trembled upon receiving the paper as she looked at it. Indeed, the result was positive.
Her lips trembled as she looked up and asked Carol, “Where is he? Where’s my son?”
The happy smile on Carol’s lips gradually decreased. The woman cast her gaze down. “I’m sorry. I didn’t get the boy. A syndicate took him.”
“What? Syndicate?” Jenica’s eyes widened. “Explain it to me!”
Carol sighed and asked her to sit on the wide rock she had prepared earlier. “Jen, a syndicate sheltered the child. The child was begging because of the orders of the people who sheltered him.” Carol bit her lower lip. “When I first saw him, he begged for me to give him a coin. I didn’t talk to him that day because a man took him away. Then I always wait for him in the same place where I saw him first and in the very next day, the boy came. I talked to him for a few days but he kept his mouth shut about the syndicate until one day, he begged me to give him a thousand. He said his dad would beat him if he didn’t get the money. Well… he did get it himself. He took my wallet with him when he ran away.”
Jenica’s lips twitched at her words. “What the h*ll! Who taught him to steal?”
“Well…” Carol closed her eyes and looked away from her with reddened cheeks. “I ran after the child until I got lost in the slums. That’s where I met that man,” said Carol and pointed to the unconscious Agent Z.
The frown on Jenica’s forehead deepened. “Tell me.”
“That man was bleeding when I saw him lying in the trash. He was still conscious when he suddenly pulled me to run away from that place. He said the syndicate was chasing him and both of our lives were in danger. He brought me here to forest but that man passed out this morning.”
Jenica pursed her lips and scoffed at Agent Z. He got the guts to mock her incompetence but look at who was lying motionless on the ground?
“Pack your things. It’s not safe to stay in this forest at night.” She knelt down by Agent Z’s side and was about to take his pulse when the man’s hand suddenly moved to grab her finger.
If she’s not fast in her reflex, her fingers might be broken by now. Damn!
She’s sure that Agent Z was unconscious, but his body was reacting to any external stimuli. Just how careful was Agent Z that even his subconscious mind tried to protect himself?!
She stood and looked at Carol. “Can you move him a bit?”
Carol snorted and approached the man. She effortlessly pushed the man away from the bonfire. “What now?” she asked, her voice sounded annoyed.
Jenica raised her eyebrows at what she saw. Agent Z’s body was not reacting to Carol’s touch. Her expression darkened and she gestured Carol not to leave her place. “Why are you with him anyway? You could have just left this man in this forest,” she said curiously and added, “Touch his arm for a bit,” she asked before quickly taking the man’s pulse.
After a while she blew out air. At least, Agent Z’s life was not in danger. It looked like he took some medicine earlier so that he wouldn’t run out of blood.
“Then how did you know I’m here? And you seem to know this man. Care to share?” Carol asked in return.
Jenica pressed her lips together. “He’s just a random dog I need to return to his owner,” she answered and gestured to the dark.
Carol was surprised when she saw the sudden appearance of a stranger in the middle of the jungle but Jenica assured her. She saw in her friend’s eyes the doubt but she just told her that the stranger was someone whom the unconcious man knew. Even though Carol didn’t fully believe her, but the woman was sensible enough to not ask again.
With the help of her assistant who was nearby, they carried the unconcious man out of the jungle. This text is property of Nô/velD/rama.Org.
“Let’s find an inn,” said Jenica.
But Agent Z spoke, suddenly regaining consciousness. “N-No need. Go to this place and don’t contact anyone,” was the man’s last command before losing consciousness again.
