Chapter 555 Repay The Debt
Before she could react, Alisha added, “If you can peacefully take care of the children here for thirty years, you’ll regain your freedom when the time limit is up. However, our funds are limited, so during this period, we can only provide you with food and shelter, and salary is out of the question.”
“Thirty years?” The moment Lysanne heard this, she lost her cool, revealing her true feelings. “This decrepit place of yours is like a haunted house! I couldn’t even stand it for thirty days!”
“You’ve lived off someone else’s life for nearly three decades. Now, it’s time to repay the debt.”
“No! No! Thirty years? After thirty years, I’ll be an old woman. I don’t want that!”
Alisha made a casual gesture. “I’m going to check on the children. Feel free to do as you wish.”
Seeing that Alisha was about to leave, Lysanne chased after her fiercely. “Hold on! Don’t think that acting like an old matron will intimidate me. I won’t be toiling away for you all here. Hurry up and-”
Thud!
A stone struck Lysanne on the head, making a distinct sound.
Lysanne had never experienced such humiliation before. Tears of pain welled up in her eyes on the spot. She didn’t even bother to chase after Alisha. Instead, she turned her head directly in the direction from where the stone had been thrown.
In the corridor stood a group of children around ten years old. At this age, adoption from the orphanage was already an improbable event.
Lysanne walked over, resentment seeping through her every step, and cursed, “What a bunch of unwanted b“stards!”
She picked up a stone from the ground, intending to throw it back, but she was unprepared for the children’s onslaught. They pelted her with stones mixed in with clumps of damp mud.
Lysanne hastily jumped up, intending to shake it off, but instead, she ended up getting even dirtier.
Upon witnessing the scene, the children began to laugh and applaud enthusiastically.
Subsequently, the objects thrown at Lysanne became overwhelmingly diverse, akin to a dense hail of bullets, preventing her from stepping forward to discipline the children.
Memories of her childhood spent in the orphanage came flooding back, overwhelming her to the point of hysterical weeping and outbursts.
“I want to go home! Dad! Mom! I need to go home!”
By the time Lysanne reached this point, she finally remembered the kindness Howard and Molly had shown her. Unfortunately, it was already too late.
When the children saw her, a grown woman, crying, they were not afraid of being scolded by the other adults in the orphanage. Instead, they circled around her as if she was a spectacle to behold, much like an animal in a 200.

still no match for their ambush. Quickly, she found herself bruised all over her head. She could only muster the strength to raise her hands in a feeble attempt to shield her face before turning to make an
escape.
The eldest child leading the group saw her run off and, cheering, led his companions in pursuit.
This bunch of kids were very good at bullying. They never truly saw her as a teacher with the orphanage. It was only when they couldn’t find anyone else to bully that they sought other forms of amusement.
When they turned around, Lysanne, who was hiding in a corner of the room, saw the violent tendencies in their eyes.
These kids were not just orphans. It was evident that they also had mental issues and violent tendencies. If she were to stay there for thirty years, they would torment her to death.
“Are you new here?”
A voice from behind halted the unsettled Lysanne.
After much difficulty, Lysanne finally encountered the second adult in this place, other than Alisha. She quickly resumed her plea for help by pleading. “Could you possibly lend me some money? I’ll repay you double! No! I’ll repay you triple the amount as soon as I get back!”
A nun, appearing to be about the same age as Alisha, promptly shook off Lysanne’s hand. “Caring for these children here is also a form of devotion. You can’t leave, so stay here at peace. The higher power will show you mercy,” she said.
Upon hearing these words, Lysanne finally succumbed to utter despair.
It turned out that this place was not just an orphanage but a place of rigorous discipline. Everyone there had chosen this path willingly, and there was no room for regrets. Even if she pleaded for help, she would just be treated as if she had lost her mind.
The nun gently reminded, “Dinner’s almost ready. Come in and lend a hand.”
“Where is this place?” Lysanne asked.
“The kitchen.”
Astonished, Lysanne took in the poor conditions of the place. Potatoes and cabbages were piled directly on the ground and a pot was simmering with something that looked like a thick paste. Out of the corner of her eye, she spotted something that resembled a rat scurrying away.
The thought of having such a dinner almost made Lysanne throw up right there and then.
The nun paid her no mind, acting as if Lysanne didn’t exist while she busied herself with her own tasks. When mealtime came around, Lysanne was somewhat repulsed by the vegetarian dish and a curry dish that bore no resemblance to curry. However, due to her unbearable hunger, she still found herself in the dining hall, intending to scoop herself a bowl of food.
The nun in charge of serving food, whom Lysanne had met in the kitchen, saw Lysanne and promptly took her bowl. After filling it with food, she handed it over to the child waiting in line behind Lysanne.
Lysanne was cold and hungry, her heart filled with frustration. Her temper flared, and she roared, “Why are you treating me differently? I was here first!”

The nun didn’t even lift her eyelids as she coldly said, “You didn’t do anything today. You don’t deserve to
eat.
Lysanne contemplated flipping over the wooden bucket filled with pasta, yet she knew no one there would tolerate her antics. Swallowing her frustration, she silently sought Alisha out on the other side of the courtyard to lodge a complaint.
person didn’t “You mentioned that although there’s no salary here, room and board are provided. But that feed me, and the children bullied me. They pelted me with stones and ganged up to insult me. Surely, the children don’t have violent tendencies, right?” Lysanne asked.
Lysanne merely wanted to play the victim to garner some sympathy. However, to her surprise, Alisha responded, “That’s right. The children sent here are the ones that regular orphanages won’t take in. They are either born with defects or have mental issues, and they stay here until they reach adulthood.”
“What?” Lysanne thought about those children, barely ten years old, who had dared to throw stones at her. She was terrified just thinking about it, so she pleaded, “Alisha, did they say anything about ensuring my safety or something similar? You have to do something. What if something bad happens to me?”
“If that were to happen, that would be your fate,” Alisha said, her expression unchanging as she rose from her finished dinner. “They didn’t instruct anything extra, but here, if you want to eat, you must learn to work.”
When Lysanne realized Alisha had no intention of entertaining her, she felt a sense of impending doom. If I continue to sit back and do nothing, I might very well starve to death one day. Content bel0ngs to Nôvel(D)r/a/ma.Org.
In this place, no one offered her any sympathy. She couldn’t even take advantage of the kindness of others.
Left with no other choice, Lysanne reluctantly made her way to the pitch–dark kitchen. There wasn’t even a bit of leftover cold pasta to be found. She had to make do with lighting a fire to boil a few potatoes.
If this had been in the past, she would have scoffed at such food, declaring even a dog wouldn’t eat it. At that moment, however, she didn’t even wait for it to cool, shoving it directly into her mouth.
Suddenly, the kitchen door was thrust open. The children, the ones who had previously mocked her, dashed in, snatched the potatoes, and bolted.
Anxious, Lysanne chased after them, only to be tripped by a child guarding the entrance. A few particularly mischievous ones stepped over her and rushed into the kitchen, even carrying away contents of the pots.
