Chapter 4: An Unexpected Escape
Chapter 4: An Unexpected Escape
Grandma was so understanding and tolerant that a wave of sadness washed over me again. I finally
lost control and started to cry.
I walked over to Grandma's bed and sat down next to her. She reached out a thin, wrinkled hand and
gently caressed my face.
"You've lost weight... You must've suffered a lot on your own," she said sadly.
"It's fine. I can take care of myself."
"I think it's time for you to find someone who can take care of you. Is there anyone that you have your
eye on?"
"N-no..."
As I said this, I suddenly thought of Leonard. For some reason, my heart and mind refused to erase
him.
"Mum, Phoebe said that she's bringing her fiancé over today, probably to decide on a wedding date.
Apparently, they want to see you as well. What do you think?" Aunt Nancy suddenly piped up.
"I don't want to see them. I've never regarded them as my family, so what do their matters have to do
with me?" Grandma's tone was cold and harsh.
Her words were a clear indication that she would never recognise Gail and Phoebe as part of the Jones
family. To her, only my mother and I were part of her family.
This made me even more grateful for Grandma, despite my apathy for the Jones family.
Grandma and I continued chatting for a while until we heard yelling coming from outside the door.
Aunt Nancy frowned as well. I could tell that it was Gail shrieking at Mary in her trademark shrill voice.
Unable to take it anymore, I walked out of Grandma's room and saw Mary standing at the staircase.
Her head bowed as Gail screamed at her.
At the sight of the soup that was splattered all over the floor, I guessed that Gail had done something to
cause this so that she could pick on Mary.

place.
"Hey, you old shrew, stop picking on an innocent maid and come after me if you have the guts."
Gail turned around when she heard my voice and glared at me. "You little b*tch! When have you ever
had the right to express an opinion in this household?"
"Look at you, acting like you're really the matriarch of the Jones family. Do you honestly think that
you're worthy of that title?" I jeered.
"What did you say, you b*tch? Looks like I'll have to teach you a lesson today and show you who's in
charge!"
As Gail spoke, she pounced at me like an angered lioness. I faced her head on and gave her two tight
slaps across the face.
Aunt Nancy hurried over to pull us apart, afraid that things would get out of hand. After all, this was the
Jones family, and I was the one who would suffer if things were to get out of hand.
Just as Aunt Nancy managed to separate us, my father suddenly appeared, looking at me furiously.
When Gail saw him, she immediately put on an act and started to sob.
"Bell, you're finally here. If you were a second later, this monster would've killed me with her bare
hands. I would've been on my way to a reunion with my unborn son..."
It was obvious that she wanted to drive my father and me even further apart than we already were so
that he would be completely on her side.
My father looked at me coldly and asked, "Did you do it?"
"Yes, I did. I slapped her!" I met his gaze and said arrogantly.
"You b*stard!" With that, he picked up a nearby mop and swung it at me.
