Mission: From Divorcee to Millionaire

Chapter 67

Joy found herself at a loss for words, her carefully rehearsed speech getting stuck in her throat. She swallowed hard before finding her voice, "Sweetheart, of course not. My heart will always be yours, like a devoted moon orbiting around you." "See, that's what I thought... I bumped into Jaime today, and he filled me in about last night. Everett still cares about you. He's not as heartless as you think..."

Selena casually pulled her hair back into a ponytail and said with a hint of indifference, "Joy, enough. Even I, who's been tangled up in all this, have woken up from the dream. Why are you holding onto it more than I am?"

For the past three years, Joy had been Selena's rock, encouraging her to pursue Everett's love. Whenever Selena felt down, Joy would always find some tiny sign that Everett cared, reigniting her hopes. Selena's fixation on proving Everett's affection grew, partly fueled by Joy's unwavering support.

If Everett hadn't tried to be with Margot and offered Selena to another man, Selena might still be caught up in her self-deluding obsession. Joy was aware of this too. Despite joining Selena in chewing Everett out, Joy kept pushing for them to reconcile rather than split. Logically, even if Joy didn't want to upset Everett, she should have been backing Selena all the way. Yet, she seemed as worried as ever about them parting ways for good.

After a few seconds of silence, Joy responded naturally, "Well... I'm just a fan of you two as a couple. Of course, I want to see you together. Should I just stand by and watch Margot sweep Everett away?"

This explanation had always been Joy's fallback, and Selena hadn't questioned it until now, when a peculiar thought popped into her mind. Joy seemed more concerned about Everett being snatched by Margot than Selena did! Selena knew Joy had always disliked Margot, but it was normal for friends to have a common enemy. Now, it seemed there might be more to it. Was there some history between Joy and Margot? Selena had never heard of any... Just as Selena was about to ask, Joy cut in from the other end of the phone, "Selena, let's hit pause on this. I've got a meeting to get to. Love ya!"

With that, Selena had to push her questions aside for now, planning to revisit them later, "Alright, go on then."

In a swanky downtown apartment, Margot's face, usually so poised and charming, was twisted with anger and resentment as she smashed everything within reach. The place was a complete mess.

When Wendy walked in, she took in the chaos with an inward sigh but didn't let it show, calmly guiding Margot to sit down. "Margot, don't let your anger get the best of you," she soothed. This content provided by N(o)velDrama].[Org.

"How can I not be furious?" Margot spat through clenched teeth. "You know how much that Ink & Insight interview meant to me. The old man's not got much time left, and if I can't change his mind before he dies, how will I ever marry into the Bennett family?"

"Josh is on his way out? Since when?" Wendy asked, taken aback.

"Lately. He's got maybe six months. It's no surprise you didn't know. The Bennett family has been keeping it hush-hush, only letting close folks in on it. That's why I'm in such a rush!"

No wonder, Wendy thought. She had been puzzled by Margot's sudden restlessness after three years of biding his time. Now it made sense.

With a thoughtful smile, Wendy said, "Margot, I actually think Josh's illness might be your golden opportunity."
