Chapter 2160
With red eyes, Jaylene said, "What about you? You tried to arrange a marriage between me and Aaron without even telling me. Are you giving your daughter away for the sake of your career and client?"
Darcie was furious. "Sometimes I really wonder if you have a brain or not. It was just a simple meal. How was I giving you away? Do you realize what year it is now? Could I possibly hold a knife to your back and force you to marry Aaron?
"If I didn't do this, do you think Mrs. Esper would agree to meet US? She and Mrs. Depp are good friends, and she treats Aaron like her own son. Aaron has feelings for you; if you'd just played along with me, I could've definitely won Mrs. Esper back as my client!
"But what did you do? You offended both of them at the same time! Do you know how many ongoing projects the Esper family has with our company? Mrs. Esper is only going to deal with Stella now. Do you realize how much money we’re going to lose?"
Jaylene muttered while still crying, "Even so, the projects are still under Caline's name, and all the earnings will have to go through the company's account first. You won't lose a lot of money."
Darcie paused, glanced at Jaylene with a disdainful look, then sneered without saying anything.
Jaylene knew she was in the wrong for lying and coming to see Keegan while pretending to be sick, so she apologized softly, "Mom, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have lied to you. But Keegan has just recovered, and he can't drink much alcohol now.
"I was just too worried about him. He didn't call me to help him; I came on my own. You shouldn't have said those things to him just now."
Darcie scoffed. "He didn't call you, but you still threw yourself at him? How shameless can you be? Are you still thinking that Keegan will someday marry you?"
Jaylene clenched her fists, looking very angry. Darcie had never said such harsh words to her before, and she could not help but retort, "Why wouldn't he? He and Stella are divorced now. He can't even remember who she is. Why can't I marry him?
"Just because your husband's daughter was once married to him, you're afraid that Dad will be angry with you after I marry him? Are you going to sacrifice my happiness just because you don't want your marriage and your status as Mrs. Saun to be affected? How could you be so selfish?"
Darcie was burning with anger. ’Did you just call me selfish? Jaylene Saun, I’ve spent so much effort raising you over the years, and now you say I'm selfish? Are you capable of thinking about anything else besides your romantic fantasies?
"If Keegan really has feelings for you, why didn't he stop Mrs. Depp from hitting you when he was right beside you? He was willing to risk his life to save Stella, but when it came to you, he didn't even bother stepping in to stop you from getting slapped.
"Can't you see it? Why are you still so obsessed with him? How could I have given birth to such an idiot like you?"
After repeatedly getting humiliated by her mother, Jaylene's self-esteem was in tatters. With red eyes, she said, ’ What about you? You were also right next to me, but you didn't stop her either!
"If you can’t do it yourself, why are you expecting someone else to do it? You told me to keep quiet when Stella bullies and insults me. Now that the person I like has nothing to do with her anymore, I still have to restrain myself because of your concerns.
"All you care about is your self-interest; you want me to live like you. Do you know this is exactly why Dad doesn't like you? In all the years of your marriage, you can only rely on the little things you did for him when you were young to bind him to you!

Slap!
Darcie's full-force slap cut off the rest of Jaylene's words.
The slap was so powerful that it left Darcie's hand numb and trembling. Jaylene's face had a clear slap mark. Her gaze, now directed at Darcie, held hatred. Darcie's heart felt like it was squeezed tightly. She was about to say something, but Jaylene just laughed.
"Yeah, I'm not going to stop liking Keegan no matter what. If you have to, just slap me until you kill me."
At that moment, Darcie's expression turned indescribably ugly.
Jaylene told the driver to stop the car. Before getting off, she looked at Darcie with red eyes. "I'll never allow my marriage to end up as failed as yours," she uttered each word clearly.
Then, she slammed the door shut and disappeared into the crowd.
Darcie's face turned pale. She was trembling as she took out a bottle of artery relaxers from her bag. She then placed a few tablets under her tongue. It took a while for her chest pain to go away.
Sins, the sins Darcie committed, were now coming back to haunt her.
Her story with Freesia was going to repeat itself on their daughters. She could only win in the end because she did not like Wenham much, but it was different for Jaylene. She was deeply attached to Keegan; that was destined to be her weakness.
Darcie just could not figure out why Jaylene was so blinded by love.
