Chapter 0401
Chapter 0401
The chatter on the other end of the phone continued, and Sonia, unable to bear it any longer, said, "What can I do? Do you think I wanted to break up with him? It's just that..."
She didn't finish the second half of her sentence. When it came to the reasons for breaking up with Alex, she had only told her family that they’d had arguments, and she dared not utter the words she shouldn't say.
At the thoughts of her parents finding out the truth, Sonia's face darkened.
She managed to say, "All right, I got it. I'll talk to you when I come back from my business trip."
After saying that, she hung up the phone.
But just a second later, her phone rang again.
Thinking it was another call from home, she impatiently answered, "Are you serious? I already said I'll talk to you when I get back..."
Before she could finish, she was interrupted. Xavier's voice came through harshly, "What are you coming back for? Have you sorted out the matters with Mr. Howles? You're already thinking of coming back? Let me tell you, if you can't handle this matter properly, just get lost!"
"I—" Sonia gripped her phone, feeling angry and resentful. Before, Xavier used to coax her, he had never been this way.
Now that he had achieved his goal, he felt she was useless and treated her like a piece of shit.
But she could only endure it now. After all, she still had to rely on Xavier. Otherwise, she wouldn't know what to do.

Angela and Yondu chatted with Candice for a while before leaving. Candice remembered something and stopped Angela, asking, "Is there any relationship between Bella and Stephan?" All content is property © NôvelDrama.Org.
Angela said, "Stephan is Bella's uncle. Why do you ask?"
Candice shook her head. "I just felt like Stephan and Darius were close to each other, so I asked. I met them when we had dinner the other day."
“Stephan really likes Darius. He says talents like him are rare," Angela said nonchalantly.
"Talents?"
"You didn't know? Darius is very intelligent. He was admitted directly to the Solaris University's Ph.D. program at the age of sixteen, so now he's working at the Quimby family's company while also doing postdoctoral research. But..." Angela hesitated. "It was unlucky for the Quimby family to encounter him."
She didn't say anything further before leaving.
Candice stared at her folder absentmindedly, frowning slightly. She had always felt that there was more to Darius's situation, and perhaps she should investigate it as well.
She remembered that Jackson's evaluation of Darius hadn’t been good either. But if that was the case, why would Darius still be with the Quimby family? And why did he and Henry pretend not to know each other?
"What are you thinking about so deeply?" A voice sounded above her head, followed by a document slamming down in front of her.
Candice looked up and saw Alex standing in front of her. She lowered her eyes to the document in front of her.
"These are the regulations that Redshade Corporation might amend next time," Alex said.
He was predicting Redshade Corporation's plans. Candice opened the document and had to admit that Alex's abilities were indeed formidable. These points were almost identical to what she and Hanley discussed.
Just as she finished organizing the documents, she heard Alex say, "Aren't you curious about the relationship between Henry and Darius?"
He asked the question most likely because he already knew something.
Candice looked at him, and Alex's eyebrows lifted slightly. He turned and walked away, saying, "Let's talk outside."
After hesitating for a moment, Candice followed. She was indeed very curious about the relationship between Henry and Darius.
After all, Darius's guidance felt too influential to her. And it seemed that both Henry and Darius were investigating her.
Candice was not naive. Many times, her intuition about danger was accurate. Darius and Henry's unsettling demeanor made her prepare herself in advance.
Outside the conference hall, not far away, there was a small pavilion, and Alex led her directly to it.
"What did you find out?" she asked.
"Something interesting," Alex said with a tone that carried a mysterious smile, part mocking, part surprised. "Do you know what was written in the section about parents' information on Darius's enrollment report?"
Candice felt a bit flustered for no reason. "What?"
"Both parents deceased," Alex's voice was low, carrying a profound meaning, "That's how it was written in all of his records whenever parental information was involved."
She frowned. "How was that possible?"
For regular information, it was understandable, but for important documents like school records, such information couldn't be filled in however you wanted.
"That was what we found. And as for Henry's information, you’re the only child listed for him. Darius isn’t there at all." He reached out to tidy up Candice's hair, which was disheveled from the wind, then asked softly, "Who do you think changed it?"
Without thinking, Candice blurted out, "Darius."
Alex raised an eyebrow, neither confirming nor denying.
Candice let out a sigh, feeling heavy-hearted.
"Scared?" Alex stood in front of her and blocked the wind. He looked down at Candice's visibly worried face, a slight curve forming at the corner of his thin lips. "If you're scared, after the summit ends next week, you can go straight back to Dorrington."
Candice wanted to stay to keep up with the progress of Redshade Corporation, and Alex knew that. She did feel complicated inside, however, and realized that things weren't as simple as she had thought.
Candice tightened her hands and lifted her face to look at Alex. "You're overthinking it."
She wasn't afraid.
She was just thinking that Darius's targeting Aether Corporation and Burning Star Studio might really be because of her.

Alex and Candice had moved far enough away from the conference hall that no one in the building or upstairs would be able to hear what they spoke about. But they were still clearly visible.
Sonia stood on the balcony, watching Alex slowly approach Candice without blinking. She saw the careful way he blocked the wind for her and the upward curve of his eyebrows.
She couldn't see Candice's expression.
But she could imagine the clear and cold look on Candice's face, a look she hadn't learned for several years.
