My Mirror Image by Maybe Not (Candice And Alex’s)

Chapter 0421

Chapter 0421

Barox's words choked Sawyer. He pursed his lips, not knowing how to explain. In the end, he could only raise his head to look at the rear-view mirror.

Candice went along with Barox's words and spoke with a cold tone, like the drizzle outside. "I'll get a ride back on my own."

As soon as she finished speaking, the rear window rolled down, revealing Alex's expressionless face. His brows and eyes were stern. When his gaze met Candice's, it felt like the falling rain had paused.

The air was cold, but Alex's gaze was even colder.

His eyes lingered on the umbrella in Barox's hand. The two-person umbrella was not large, and Candice and Barox were quite close to each other. Even though there was an umbrella handle between them, their sleeves touched. It looked intimate.

Barox held the umbrella for Candice, his eyes expressionless, showing some impatience. He could not help but say. "Mr. Elysian, I don't think we can all fit in this ‘taxi’ of yours."

"Candice, the rain is getting heavier..." Sawyer was still trying to persuade her. He couldn’t help but frown and glance in the rearview mirror at the lack of input from Alex. He whispered, "Mr. Elysian?"

The rear passenger window slid closed.

Alex looked through the glass at the two people huddled under the umbrella, his eyes deep. He was about to speak when his phone rang.

He glanced down and saw it was Daniel calling.

Alex and his father weren’t that close. Unless it was something urgent, Daniel rarely took the initiative to contact him.

Of course, what Daniel considered urgent was often not good news for Alex.

He answered the phone casually, but before he could speak, Daniel's stern voice came through first.

"I heard that you couldn't even qualify for the Redshade Tender in Solaris? Alex, what are you doing? If you can’t even do this, how will you enter the headquarters in the future?!" Daniel's tone was full of blame and reprimand. He sounded like he was lamenting. "I didn't agree with you trying a new direction before. Look at what you're doing now. Aether doesn’t have that much reputation that you can just discard it!"

Daniel growled without even asking for the reasons, criticizing Alex's wrong decisions without hesitation. His voice was deep and full of energy.

Alex held the phone away from his ear. He did not put it on speaker, but in the front Sawyer could still hear everything clearly, and couldn’t help but frown.

Alex acted as if he had not heard anything. His expression was as calm as still waters, his eyes fixed on the rain outside.

After scolding for a while, Daniel finally got to the point. "Do you know that the Sui family now controls 43% of the shares in the board of directors? Alex, I don't care what means you use, but get back here quickly. Otherwise, you'll see Aether change its name to Sui."

Alex sneered silently, then said, "You were the one who kicked me out in the first place. Now you expect me to come back quickly to help you grab shares?"

"What kind of attitude is this?” Daniel raged. “Who do you think I'm doing this for? Let me tell you, don't be ignorant of what's good for you. If you can't handle things in Solaris, you better come back and marry Nina. With the help of Ava Goodman, the board of directors won't say anything."

Alex's expression turned cold almost instantly. "Is there anything else?"

"You—" Daniel's words were cut off as Alex hung up on the call.

Sawyer sat in the front, not daring to breathe heavily. After waiting for a minute, he cautiously asked. "Mr. Elysian, Candice probably hasn't gone far yet. Do you want to pick them up and go back to the hotel together?"

"Them?" Alex emphasized the word 'them,' his mood was already extremely bad, and now his expression turned completely black. "It's her own business if she likes to walk in the rain. What does it have to do with me?" he said coldly.

Sawyer mumbled an acknowledgment and stepped on the gas.

The entrance of the meeting hall was very narrow, with flower beds on both sides. Outside was a junction. Candice and Barox left and prepared to hail a taxi at the intersection.

Barox had taken a taxi to get there. He only had one umbrella, so he pulled his jacket's hood over his head and tilted the umbrella towards Candice. Almost as soon as they left the meeting room, he distanced himself from Candice.

Candice was thinking about how to send Barox back. She couldn’t let Yana say everything, it wouldn’t be appropriate.

She thought for a moment and asked Barox, "How long have you been in Solaris?"

"Almost a month."

"I remember you were still a student. It's not good to be delayed for so long, right?"

After a moment of silence, Barox looked at Candice strangely and said, "Didn't Yana tell you? There's a funding issue in my lab, so we've stopped working."

"Lab?"

Barox explained. "I was doing post-doctoral research at Dorrington University. There's a funding issue with my research project, so I came out to work." He paused when he said the last sentence. Content © NôvelDrama.Org.

Barox clearly liked Yana, and Candice understood why he had listened to Yana’s request to come and help her in Solaris.

But he really came to work.

She couldn’t help but ask, "What research project are you working on?"

"We're building a suspended warehouse on the moon."

Candice didn’t know much about scientific research projects in that area, so she changed the topic. "Barox, I've been very busy with work recently, so I may not be able to take care of you. I think you can go back to Dorrington first. I'll still pay your salary."

Barox paused. "Am I fired? Watch out!"

He shouted suddenly and Candice felt him pull her aside, the umbrella falling to the ground.

It all happened in an instant, and it was only after she turned that Candice saw a bicycle rushing towards her from behind.

A young girl in a raincoat was riding the bike, looking panicked as she fell to the ground. She was wearing a school uniform and looked quite young, probably a junior high student. The girl scrambled to get up, tears streaming down her face, apologizing frantically.

Barox didn’t fall, but he had twisted his ankle. Candice reached out to help him, as he had gotten hurt protecting her. Before she could, a hand with distinct knuckles had already reached out and supported Barox's arm.

Sawyer helped steady Barox and explained to Candice, "You don't have much strength. You might be more hindrance than help."

Candice understood and did not argue with Sawyer. She said to Barox, "Let me take you to the hospital now."

But just as Barox took a few steps, the girl behind them ran over crying. Pointing at the spot on Barox's calf she cried out, panicked, "His leg is bleeding!"

Candice looked and saw a tear in the pants on the right side of Barox's calf, revealing a bloody wound.

Her heart sank. Before she could ask Barox, Alex's Bentley had already pulled up in front of them.

He sat in the driver's seat, looking at her with his eyes deep and cold, mysterious and obscure.
