Lenora and Zachary Chapter 493
Chapter 493 Sweet Nothings
David speculated aloud, "Are you feeling homesick?"
Zephyr shook his head, his gaze flickering toward Sophia sitting beside him. "I don't really have a home to miss. My parents are both gone. But since Sophia's in Jacaster, I thought maybe, just maybe, I'd run into her again someday." Sophia's lips tightened as she fought the urge to roll her eyes. Sweet nothings!
Yet, her parents seemed charmed by what they perceived as Zephyr's sincerity.
David chuckled, a spark of mischief in his tone. An exceptional son-in-law like him in the Tortell family business could really make the company flourish. And once Felix joins, Zephyr, as his brother-in-law, could lend him a hand. It all fits perfectly. Though Tortell Fashion had a solid reputation, it couldn't hold a candle to Richfield Investments. The question remained: would Zephyr even entertain the idea? David decided he would have to tread carefully. I'll ease into it and wait for just the right moment. David and Evelyn had already accepted Zephyr as their future son-in-law in their hearts. His natural charm made the lunch enjoyable for everyone, filling the room with laughter and light conversation. Yet, beneath her cheerful facade, Sophia felt a strange sense of melancholy she couldn't quite place.
Her parents' delight with Zephyr should have made her happy; it was a good thing, but watching him effortlessly win them over, his jokes drawing hearty laughter, left her feeling a bit dispirited.
After lunch, Evelyn suggested that Sophia escort Zephyr upstairs to rest, deliberately giving them some alone time.
Zephyr followed Sophia upstairs. Sophia casually pushed open the door to a guest room, "You should go in and rest for a bit."
Zephyr gently grabbed her wrist. "Come with me, there's something I need to tell you."
"What is it?" Sophia followed him into the guest room.noveldrama
Zephyr closed the door and said, "I won't bring up the matter of marriage today. We'll talk about
next time."
Sophia raised an eyebrow. "But even then, they might not agree to the wedding next month. Have you figured out how to persuade them?"
"It's going to be a piece of cake."
""You seem confident."
With a smile, Zephyr took two steps forward, slightly leaned over, and whispered something into Sophia's ear.
Sophia's ears turned red in embarrassment, and her annoyance flared into anger. Grinding her teeth in frustration, she retorted, "Pregnant? No way. Don't expect me to go along with your plan!" "Come on, Sophia..."
"No means no! And don't you dare say that again. If you do, there will be consequences," Sophia retorted with a smirk.
"All right, all right. Fine. I'll think of something else. I think I should be able to handle your dad. I just need to convince your mom first."
"I can persuade my mom," Sophia said. "All you need to do is find a valid reason to get my dad's permission."
"All right."
After Zephyr left the Tortell residence, David advised Sophia, "I think Zephyr is a decent young man, deeply devoted to you. You should hold on to him tightly and avoid being as willful as you are at home." "I know what to do, Dad."
David was speechless at her blunt remark before saying, "No matter what, you'll always be Daddy's baby girl."
Seeing Sophia's impatient expression, David waved his hand. "Go keep your mom company. I'm off to the office."
As soon as David left, Evelyn called Sophia over to her side. "Come here, I have something to ask you."
""What is it?"
"What exactly happened between you and Zephyr back in high school?" Evelyn asked, her gaze piercing Sophia as if she had already figured it out.
Sophia's eyes twinkled as she blinked and played dumb. "What do you mean? What's this about me and him in high school?"
Evelyn snorted. "Please. Given how much you dreaded doing homework, I know you well enough to know that you would never offer to tutor a classmate."
Sophia tugged at her mother's arm, attempting to bluff her way through. "I suddenly realized the importance of studying back then. I despised my former self and decided to turn over a new leaf, to rectify my past mistakes. Weren't you happy to see that?" "Do you really think I'd believe that?" Evelyn looked at her daughter, not convinced by a single word she said.
After Sophia was born, Evelyn became pregnant again. However, at three months, it was discovered that the baby's heartbeat was absent, resulting in a miscarriage. After that, she never conceived again, and she showered her only daughter with love.
When Sophia was a child, she often showed a lack of interest in her studies. As her mother, Evelyn hadn't disciplined her enough to correct her behavior, which allowed Sophia to get by. However, this behavior only escalated over time, leading to her complete disregard for her
education.
Regret washed over Evelyn. She wished she had been stricter with her when she was young. It would have been for her own good.
Sophia pursed her lips, lowering her head in silence.
Evelyn asked again, "Tell me the truth. Were you and Zephyr in love back in high school?"
Sophia bit her lip, realizing she couldn't hide it any longer. She gave a sheepish smile and held her mother's hand. "Mom, it's been so many years. Why bring this up now?"
Upon hearing her words, Evelyn knew she had guessed correctly. "Back then, when your father and I wanted to send you abroad, you were adamantly against it. Was it because of him?" "Well, not exactly..." Sophia hesitated for a moment. "I didn't want to go abroad because I didn't want to leave you. That's all!"
"It has been so many years now, and now you and Zephyr are discussing marriage. Just tell me the truth already. Do you think I can still do anything to stop you two from getting together?" After some thought, Sophia spoke with a touch of hesitation. "We were indeed in a relationship during high school. But when he moved abroad, we broke up. And then..."
"Then he returned to the country to pursue you?"
Sophia hummed in acknowledgment.
"Do you still have feelings for him? Do you still want to be with him?"
Once again, Sophia hummed in response.
Evelyn couldn't help but sigh. "Sophia, I'll always support whatever you want to do. I'm just worried that you won't be able to handle him. If he tries to manipulate you, with your level of intelligence, he could sell you out without you realizing, and you night even thank him for that."
"Mom, how could you think of me like this? I'm your daughter, for goodness' sake."
"Am I not speaking the truth?"
Sophia was rendered speechless. "You're overthinking, Mom. What do I have that's worth him selling?"
Speaking in a hushed tone, Sophia added, "Mom, he promised me. After we get married, he will join our family business and start networking."
"You didn't reconcile with him just because of this, did you?" Evelyn asked in surprise, her voice laced with worry. "Sophia, please don't do anything rash. Even though I'm not comfortable with giving up the company so easily, your lifelong
happiness is what matters most.
Please, don't act recklessly."
"No, Mom, I reconciled with him because I like him. Who doesn't appreciate someone outstanding? It's just that he happens to have that ability, that's all."
Seeing her respond in this way, Evelyn finally heaved a sigh of relief. "All right then."
"By the way, we're thinking of getting married next month."
"So soon?"
"Yeah. We don't want to drag it out any longer. I mean, look at Felix, he's already in his sophomore year."
"But isn't this too fast?" Evelyn was still worried. "You weren't lying to me just now, were you?"
"Why would I lie to you? The truth is, we reconciled last year. It's just that we didn't tell you all. In fact, when I went to Newcove with Lenora at the beginning of the year, he was there with us too."
Evelyn's thoughts drifted at her remark.
Suddenly, a thought flashed through her mind. She glanced down at Sophia's stomach and whispered, "Sophia, you're not pregnant, are you?"
Evelyn believed that would explain their urgency to get married.
Sophia didn't know how to react to that speculation. "Mom, what are you talking about? W-We've always been careful..."
Both of them were in their late twenties and had spent so much time together. Despite having their share of breakups and makeups, their relationship now remained passionate. It would be a lie if Sophia were to say nothing had happened between them. Sophia continued to reassure Evelyn. "Don't worry, we are genuinely in love. Since we're bound to get married sooner or later, why not sooner? That way, he can come into the company and start making plans. Isn't that a win-win situation?"
"I don't think your dad will agree to this."
"That's why I told Zephyr to go back and think of a way to persuade Dad. When the time comes, I hope you can join me in getting his approval for our marriage."
"All right then."
What do you think?
