Chapter 491 The Saying Is True

"What?"

"What?"noveldrama

Both David and Evelyn asked in unison.

As the words fell, the two exchanged a glance.

Back then, when Evelyn first learned that David had been unfaithful to her twenty years ago, that he even had an illegitimate child who was now old enough to attend university, she had her own bout of hysteria. Nonetheless, she quickly regained her composure, and the first question that came to her mind was whether she should divorce him.

The answer was no.

She knew that once they divorced, it would inadvertently pave the way for the mistress to force her way into the Tortell family. In other words, she'd be giving up everything to someone else without a fight. Sophia was, after all, the daughter David had raised by his side. Out of guilt, he had become increasingly indulgent toward her. If he were to pass away now, Sophia would surely inherit a substantial fortune. However, if the mistress were to join the Tortell family, that would be a different story.

David was in good health at the time, and it seemed inevitable that he would spend the next ten to twenty years with his mistress. Already, he had begun to contemplate handing over the reins of the company to his son. In ten to twenty years, Sophia would gradually be marginalized, and might even be ousted from the Tortell family.

From a young age, Sophia was quite carefree and simple-minded, lacking guile. She also had a bit of a stubborn streak. This undoubtedly made Evelyn very worried about her.

Already past the age of fifty, there wasn't much to look forward to in the latter half of life. At this point, divorce seemed meaningless to her. Instead of parting ways, she figured that it seemed better to uphold the status quo and fight for more for Sophia.

Once Evelyn decided against a divorce, she calmed down significantly. She had a thorough discussion with David, taking advantage of the lingering guilt within him to convince him to transfer a portion of his wealth under Sophia's name. And so, the two of them maintained a superficial peace currently.

"Don't be surprised." Sophia glanced at the two of them, a faint smile playing on her lips. "My boyfriend wants to come over and visit you guys tomorrow."

Taken aback, David and Evelyn shared a glance.

David slightly furrowed his brows, reprimanding in a low voice, "When did you get yourself a boyfriend? You never mentioned anything. Don't bring home someone of questionable character."

Evelyn looked at Sophia and nodded gently.

Sophia wasn't a naive and ignorant girl. The fact that she suggested bringing her boyfriend home either meant their relationship was profound, reaching a stage where marriage was on the table, or she had been deceived by sweet talk. From Evelyn's perspective, she believed it was certainly the latter.

"If he's a shady person, why did you introduce him to me?" Sophia raised an eyebrow.

David's brows relaxed slightly, pondering over Sophia's obsession with looks. "I was the one who introduced him to you? Could it be Zephyr?"

"It's him."

"I see. Look, you were still so resistant when I suggested you go on that blind date. Now you see I wasn't lying, don't you?" David wore an expression that clearly indicated that he had done everything for Sophia's good. "Haha." Sophia rolled her eyes.

Zephyr was introduced by an old friend of David. It was only after both David and Evelyn saw his photo and felt reassured enough that they agreed to let him meet Sophia for a potential match. Evelyn asked, "But didn't you mention before that you weren't interested in him? You said he wasn't serious because he chose a bar as the meeting place, didn't you?"

Sophia pressed her lips together in a smile. "Back then, there was indeed some unpleasantness. Besides, I was particularly annoyed with him at that time, so I purposely said so to you all." "Why aren't you annoyed with him anymore?"

Sophia paused for a moment, racking her brains, but she truly couldn't concoct a response. With no other option, she playfully grabbed Evelyn's arm, feigning shyness as she said, "Oh, Mom, can you please stop asking?" "All right, all right, I won't pry any further. You've started dating and didn't even inform us. Now that you two are together, we should meet him tomorrow."

"Mhm."

As the three of them dined together, David and Evelyn would occasionally inquire about some details from Sophia.

"Do you know what his family situation is like?"

When David's old friend made the

introduction, he confidently vouched that Zephyr was a decent young man. He came from a humble background, but he was a self-made individual. During his studies abroad, he established a venture capital firm. Last year, he returned to his home country, intending to expand his

ventures there.

"Um, his... his mom passed away a long time ago. As for his dad, I'm not quite sure. I didn't ask in detail." Sophia sounded somewhat hesitant, panicking internally. D*mn, I forgot to ask Zephyr about his situation. She recalled that during their high school years, Zephyr's father had been seriously ill. Now, she wasn't sure if he was still alive.

Evelyn let out a sigh. "You're at the point of meeting each other's parents and you still don't know what his family situation is like? Has he mentioned bringing you to meet his parents?"

This child is so naive and innocent. How can I possibly be at ease?

"No."

Sophia supposed Zephyr's father must have passed away, too.

He must have no family members by his side, and that's why he never brought up the matter of me meeting his parents.

Evelyn slightly furrowed her brows, asking, "What is he doing now? Has he joined a company or started a new venture?"

Sophia tugged at the corner of her mouth, her forehead breaking out in a sweat.

Oh no. I forgot to ask about this too. I'm not prepared at all for this visit. This is all Zephyr's fault. What's with the rush to get married?

Her mind raced quickly, and she turned to David and Evelyn, saying with a smile, "Don't worry. When he comes tomorrow, you can ask him directly."

"1

I just want to get to know him a bit more in advance. Can't you just tell us?"

"Even if I tell you now, you'll surely ask him again tomorrow and get to know more about his financial situation. So, why am I even bothering to explain it now?" "You're full of nonsense."

David said, "Fine, if you say so. Anyway, we'll meet him tomorrow. I'll get someone to bring a couple of bottles of fine wine tomorrow."

That night, Sophia didn't return

home. After dinner, she sent a message to. Zephyr, informing him that she had already told her parents about his visit planned for the next day. She advised him to come over in the morning, whenever it suited him.

The following morning, when Sophia came down for breakfast, she saw David dressed in a short-sleeved shirt and suit trousers. His prominent beer belly was cinched with a black belt. His hair was slicked back, and his beard was

freshly trimmed, revealing a hint of

stubble on his chin. He looked

remarkably invigorated.

Evelyn had simply swept her hair up at the back, donned an elegant long dress, and maintained her appearance well. She exuded an air of grace and beauty, making it clear that she had been quite the beauty with a unique charm in her youth.

And yet, Dad actually cheated on her? Sure enough, the saying is true! The grass is always greener on the other side!

Sophia gave her father a hard glare before she softly chuckled and took a seat next to Evelyn. "Mom, you look truly beautiful today," she complimented.

David fell silent.

"This is the first time we're meeting your boyfriend, I have to take it seriously, of course. Who knows, he might just be my future son-in-law!" Evelyn said with a laugh.

"Mom, you are his elder, and he's the younger one. Even if you do nothing, he should still show you respect."

The wait was getting a little long. Sophia glanced at her watch, her brows furrowing as she muttered, "Why hasn't he arrived yet?"

It was almost half past ten.

Evelyn chuckled teasingly. "What's the rush?"

"I'm hardly in a rush. I just don't want you to wait that long."

Suddenly, the sound of a car engine echoed from outside.

Evelyn nudged Sophia, who was sitting next to her, asking, "Is he here? Go take a look."

"Why should I go out when he can come in by himself?"

Though Sophia said that, she still rose to her feet, swiftly exiting the living room. There she saw Zephyr entering, one hand carrying two boxes of fine wine, and the other holding a gift. "You're here. Hurry up and come in."

For some reason, she felt a bit nervous inside.

Perhaps there was a fear that Zephyr might not perform well.

Zephyr trailed behind Sophia as they entered the living room. With a smile, he greeted the two elders seated on the couch, "Hello, Mr. and Mrs. Tortell."
