Chapter 308
Chapter 308
As Clara narrowly avoided being hit by the gurney, a large hand clutched it with a vice-like grip. Ryker's face was a thundercloud as he glared at the young nurse. "You looking to get fired?!"
The nurse, white as a sheet, immediately apologized to Clara, "I'm so sorry, I lost control for a moment."
Only then did Clara turn around to see the gurney that had come within an inch of her. A shiver ran down her spine at the close call. Someone lay on the gurney. With the momentum it had, if Ryker hadn’t acted so quickly, Clara would have been sent sprawling. The consequences didn't bear thinking about.
She had just finished an examination, and then this incident happened... Was it a coincidence, or was there something more sinister at play?
Clara pretended to be nonchalant, tugging at Ryker's arm. "It didn't hit me, it's fine. Let them go. Don't hold up the patient's treatment."
Ryker released his wrist and shot the nurse a look that said, 'Get lost,' which sent her scurrying away with the gurney.
Once she was out of earshot, Clara leaned in and whispered to Ryker, "Follow her discreetly, see who she's in contact with."
Ryker left without a word. Fifteen minutes later, he was bacl in the car, his expression one of cold fury. "You were right. That nurse went upstairs and met with Heidi. She's the caregiver in Heidi's grandmother's ward."
Upon hearing this, Sasha cursed angrily, "I swear, I'm ready to take a knife to that witch. Why is she buzzing around you like a pesky fly?"
A chilling resolve settled in Clara’s eyes, and her lips tightened involuntarily. "She must have seen us at the OB-GYN. She's trying to probe our defenses." Content © NôvelDrama.Org 2024.
"Good thing I had the presence of mind to use my name," Sasha said with relief. "Otherwise, that bitch might have found out and caused no end of trouble."
Ryker, sitting in the driver's seat with his hands clenched tightly on the steering wheel, let a mischievous smile creep across his face. "Now that we're in Riddleton, I'll give her a proper welcome."
The group decided to visit Sasha's house first to celebrate the New Year and have lunch. Afterward, Clara accompanied Ryker to visit Marco.
Mr. Marco had been eagerly awaiting their arrival at the doorstep. Spotting the car, he walked over with a beaming smile. "Clara, why are you only arriving now? I've been waiting outside for half an hour."
Clara hugged Marco's arm and said with a laugh, "I remembered your wife loves the pastries from that shop in the west end of town, so I picked some up. Sorry, it took a bit longer than expected."
"Look at how thoughtful you are. After all these years, you still remember what my wife likes. Unlike that scamp," he said, glaring at Ryker, "who comes back empty-handed." He shook his head at Ryker and led Clara inside.
Ryker could only shake his head in amusement. As soon as Marco saw his favorite student, nobody else stood a chance. He opened the trunk and started unloading the various gift boxes Clara had bought, handing them over to the butler who had come to assist.
It wasn't Clara's first time at Marco's place. She had been there a few times during her college years. Yet, a few years had passed, and the layout of the yard seemed to have changed
significantly.
Where there once was a golf course now stood a helipad with a helicopter resting on it. It looked like business had been good for Mr. Marco in recent years. Clara felt a surge of pride for Ryker, having such a prosperous family background.
Mr. Marco led her around the courtyard toward the inner hall, all the while chatting. "You came at the perfect time. The whole family is here, and it's not often we all get together. It’s going to be a lively celebration."
Hearing this, Clara shook her head with a smile, "Marco, I don't want to intrude on your family reunion. I’ll just say hello to your wife and then head back home."
