Chapter 1629
In a villa on the outskirts of Devonport.
It was James' first visit to the place where Odie was being held captive.
Darkness enveloped the room, with only a bed visible.
All the windows were nailed shut tightly.
From the moment Odie decided to hand over the gemstone to The Silent Shadows, he had a hunch about his fate.Content rights by NôvelDr//ama.Org.
The Silent Shadows had a requirement for the inclusion of traitors: a so-called blessing ceremony.
But this ceremony involved injecting the betrayer with a newly developed drug, essentially using them as a free test subject for The Silent Shadows. Death was the best outcome; surviving often meant living as a broken man. The process wasn't painful, even blissful, which is why it was dubbed a blessing ceremony.
"When were you injected with this stuff?"
In response to James' question, Odie, leaning on the bed, said indifferently, "The moment I handed over the gemstone. But this is none of your business, just give me the drug!"
By nightfall, Odie was in a sorry state.
The substance indeed alleviated the pain for an hour after injection, but after that, he had to endure inhuman torture. Once the addiction kicked in, his bones felt as if they were being gnawed by thousands of ants.
And this agony affected the nervous system. At its worst, he even thought about ramming his head against the wall or biting his tongue to commit suicide.
He couldn't leave with Sophie because he was now addicted and couldn't live without the drug.
The Silent Shadows used these methods to punish traitors and keep them imprisoned, willing to stay and never dare to leave.
"You treat your life and body with such disdain, don't you consider the consequences at all?"
"What's there to consider? It's just a miserable life."
Odie didn't want to waste words with James here. He stood up, took the drug from James' hand, and said, "I've seen plenty of this stuff Been through hell, what's there to
fear? Don't joke. Even if I inject this, I
can quit."
"Are you kidding? I don't believe you don't know this is refined and developed. Once injected, even the strongest will can't help. Odie, you're really courting death!"
Unperturbed, Odie injected the drug into his arm, saying, "I'm not afraid of death. As long as the people I care about can live, I'm fine with anything."
"The people you care about can live? Don't you know Jonah is dead?"
That sentence made Odie stop the injection, his movement freezing for a moment.
James continued, "It was because he and Sophie went to rescue you that they fell into Kena's ambush. Jonah was killed by random gunfire, and Sophie was shot in the chest. If it weren't for Colby arriving intime, Sophie would be dead too."
"You know Sophie is a cautious person; she never acts impulsively. But because of you, she took a huge risk without considering the consequences. She even deceived Reece with a fake contract, which has already made the leader of The Silent Shadows want to kill her. And now, for you again, she's willing to meet the leader alone. Odie, they are trying so hard for you, and yet, are you just going to give up on your life?"
