After what felt like an eternity, the heavy double doors of the operating room finally swung open. A team of tired surgeons and nurses emerged, wheeling in a hospital bed whereupon lay Emily, connected to dozens of wires and tubes, her small body looking impossibly fragile against the white sheets.

Emma and Alexander scrambled forward, both their breaths catching in their throats as they scrambled to her side.

"Emily," Emma whispered, shaking wildly as she swept a trembling hand across her pale child's face. Her skin was clammy to the touch; her lips had a faint shade of blue. Emma's heart clenched painfully.

Alexander, usually so cold and unreadable, was a man undone. His hands reached for Emily's finger, his thumb stroking over her knuckles.

But this feeling of relief was short-lived because, though Emily had survived the surgery, the battle was far from over.

The lead surgeon blew out a sigh, pulling off his mask, his eyes exhausted. "She's stable for now, but." He trailed off, looking from Alexander to Emma. "Her condition is still critical, and though the surgery has alleviated some of the complications, yet." Of course, Alexander knew too well what he was about to say next.

Even the secret teams he gathered haven't come up with anything either.

The doctor's silence confirmed Emma's worst fears.

Emma's legs buckled from under her. Ethan's small arms wrapped around her waist, but she didn't notice.

The path ahead now was no less dark than before.

And however much she thinks, there seems not a glimpse of light ahead.

The tears pricked at her eyes, but she refused to cry.
