255 A pious, clinging goodbye
Two men barged in, and are now scavenging the dusty room. Each with a baseball bat in their hands. No guns. That's good news.
Looks like they don't have a lot of people. That's why it took a while for them to sweep to this room. But still, they are all men with weapons, while Scar and Sebastian have nothing to put up a proper defense. It's only a matter of time before they corner them in this tiny closet, and if that happens, then they would really be a lamb to the slaughter.
"What do we do now?!" Scar hisses. Her whisper is so low that it barely reaches Sebastian, yet she feels like her voice is loud like thunder, "Do we make a run for it?"
"Not safe," Sebastian mumbles back, keeping an eye outside through the gap between the crooked doors, "Neither of them is from the car behind you. Meaning they have at least five people, three are waiting out there." Scar grips her dress to calm herself, but that doesn't stop her tremble.noveldrama
Sebastian reaches over slowly, grabbing her fear-frozen hand, letting the warmth of his palm calm her. Scar nearly gasps at that touch. It helps to have someone with her in this desperate situation, but only so little. She has been so naive.
With borrowed power from a man she doesn't know, she thought she had won the battle before even started. How could she not expect that the Fullers would fight back?
She cornered them, and now they tore through the line of law.
Sebastian leans over and whispers into her ear, hiding his voice, and moves under the smashing sound outside the thin door that's keeping them separated from the two thugs, "We can't stay here, I'll go and lure them away--" "No! I don't want you to go," Scar blurts, grabbing his collar. Her huge deer eyes barely holding back the tears twirling in there, "Please, don't leave me alone..."
She doesn't know what that means. Instinct tells her his journey would not be a safe one.
"We can't hide here forever. They will find us sooner or later," The man rubs her twisted eyebrows gently, a bitter smile on his face, "I need you to be strong for me, baby. Nothing will happen to you, I promise. You can do this!"
He has never called her that, ever. Not when he saw her as Ava's bully, not in the five years when he stayed in the marriage he didn't want, not even when he tried to build a real family with her.
That one word brings her tears down.
She has never felt that she was
cared for, so real, so genuine, and so selfless. From the one man she had longed for her whole life. It's such a
shock that she doesn't know what to feel. Why is he giving her this. one thing she wanted, after so many things have happened that she couldn't go back, at the most dangerous moment?!
"Don't go, please..." Scar grabs his sleeve, almost unable to control her voice, "They will kill you!"
"They won't. They are hired guns. Murder is too high a price," He comforts her, "By the way, I HAVE called the police, and they will be here any moment now. All you need to do is to hide long enough and you will be safe, okay?"
"No! Not okay! You didn't call the
police, did you?!" Scar wouldn't let go of his sleeve. He says it's safe, but Scar knows him too well. She spent her whole life admiring this man, as a little girl, as his wife. She knows the difference between a plan and a comforting lie. If he is so confident about being rescued in time, then he won't choose the most dangerous way for himself to buy her time!
He did call, but it's also weird how the police haven't come after so long. But Sebastian can't tell her any of this. Getting Scar nervous is no good to anyone. They both lost their phones, and there are a dozen thugs surrounding them, at least.
If Jack Fuller had sent them, then they definitely would have hurt Scar. He has suspected Silco, the man who he knows nothing about. That man is capable of pulling this off, but for what reason? It's too high a price to pay when all he wants from Sear is to set her up for such a
simple abduction.
But IF the latter, then it would explain why the police haven't come -- That man definitely has the power to lead the police where he wants to.
But he can't tell Scar that.
"We are on the outskirts of the city, that's all. I'm sure they are on their way--"
"No! The police won't come or they would have been here by now! You are just saying that to make me feel better! I--"
He is, and he is going to pay dearly for doing so. Burned by her tears, Sebastian grabs the back of her neck, pressing his lips over hers. Just that. It's barely a kiss, but more like a farewell.
A pious, clinging goodbye.
