Chapter 228
Chapter 228
Ronan didn't bother to engage anymore, instead, he gave Cordelia a few stern slaps on the face.
Cordelia was in a deep sleep, mumbling, "What's going on?"
She opened her eyes to see Ronan standing by her bed. "How did you get in?"
"Barney's in the hospital! Come with me." Ronan stated with a grim expression.
Cordelia had been up all night, her mind was foggy, but hearing this news, she quickly got out of bed,
changed her clothes, skipped brushing her teeth and washing her face.
Barney had once said that cancer was incurable, and he wanted to preserve his last dignity, so he had
always refused to go to the hospital. Now that he had been admitted, it seemed that things were not
looking good.
"How's Barney?" In the car, she couldn't help but cry.
"Weren't you waiting for this day?" Ronan has been grim these days, never cracking a smile.
"No! I hope nothing happens to Barney. I'm not like you." Cordelia retorted.
Even though she didn't like Ronan, she had a good impression of Barney.
Ronan turned his head to look out the window.
Barney was in the best room of the best hospital. When Cordelia arrived at the hospital, she saw
Deanna standing in the corridor. As soon as Ronan arrived, she instinctively clung to Ronan's arm.
Cordelia pretended not to see.
"What's the point of letting her stay at home? Janice couldn't wake her up," Deanna said to Cordelia.
Perhaps Ronan had told Deanna about Cordelia's purpose in the Evans family.
Cordelia felt even more guilty. Janice had tried to wake her up, but she didn’t hear it.
"Doctor, I want to see Barney." Cordelia grabbed the hand of a doctor who was coming out of the ward.
"Okay, you can get in," The doctor said.
"Okay." After saying that, Cordelia quickly entered Barney's ward.
Seeing the frail old man on the bed, Cordelia couldn't help but cry out, "Barney, Barney."
After a long time, Barney opened his eyes. "Della." He was very weak.
"Barney." Cordelia grabbed Barney's dry hand.
Barney laughed. "Della, I know. You and Ronan are just putting on a show for me. I..."
Barney coughed again.
"No more talking." Cordelia stroked Barney's chest, helping him to breathe easier.
"I know everything. At first, you and Ronan came back and didn't interact in the living room. It was like
you were forced together. It wasn't like this when I was newly married with your grandmother. We were
inseparable, wishing we could spend 24 hours together. I liked you very much and tried to bring you Têxt © NôvelDrama.Org.
and Ronan together. Even going so far as to change the allocation of the inheritance to try and make
you two a real married couple. It seemed like you two were getting better, but then, your mother's
incident happened. I know that it was my son and grandson who let you down. You love your mother so
much, you definitely won't forgive Ronan. I beg you, can you forgive Ronan?" Barney held Cordelia's
hand tighter.
Cordelia was already sobbing uncontrollably. She had thought that she and Ronan were just putting on
a show, but they hadn't performed well, and Barney had seen through them. Barney had just been
playing along with them.
"It's okay, it's okay..." Barney managed to say before he fell unconscious.
Cordelia looked at Barney for a while before leaving. In the corridor, she continued to cry. After all, she
had been with Barney for a year, and he had been very good to her during this year. Even though she
wasn't really his granddaughter-in-law, he had always treated her as if she was.
Cordelia continued to cry in the corridor, not paying attention to Deanna and Ronan nearby.
Barney passed away three days later, on a cold day with no sunshine. Having recently lost her mother
and Barney, Cordelia felt that there was nothing left for her in life.
Throughout the process, Deanna had also been there.
Without Barney, the house became even colder and emptier, leaving only Ronan, Janice, and a few
part-time maids.
Unable to bear the loneliness and desolation, and knowing that staying here would only bring back
painful memories, Cordelia decided to leave Millstone as soon as possible. She was also afraid that
Ronan wouldn't divorce her if she stayed too long.
She knocked on Ronan's door. Ronan was sitting on the couch smoking, the smoke shrouding his face.
"Here for the divorce papers?" He asked, his voice low and somber as he squinted at Cordelia.
"We agreed to get married for this reason, Mr. Evans. Don't go back on your word," Cordelia replied,
holding her head high.
"Of course." With that, Ronan handed her the divorce papers from the side.
Cordelia opened them and took a long sigh of relief. She sighed in relief, and Ronan had seen it all.
"The one billion I promised you will soon be in your account," Ronan added.
"I don't want it! This is enough. I'm leaving tomorrow." With that, Cordelia turned and walked away.
