Chapter 243
Chapter 243
The Colby family.
When Thomas saw Jamie grabbing his car keys to leave, he had the housekeeper stop him.
"At this ungodly hour, where are you off to? Don't you have any sense at all? She's another man's
woman," Thomas raged.
"They're divorced now. Their marriage wasn't exactly a fairy tale, to begin with," Jamie responded,
hastening to put on his coat. He had a gut feeling that something was wrong with Cordelia, otherwise,
she wouldn't have sent a single text saying "Okay" in the middle of the night. "Why did you make her
move out? Why can't you tolerate her presence?"
"Jamie, is this how you talk to your old man? She's another man's woman, and the kid she's carrying
may not be yours. What's your rush? If the children aren't Ronan's, why would he take Cordelia back?
She was all too happy when she was packing up. It's a spat between a husband and wife. Why are you
acting like a jester in the middle of it? Don't you feel embarrassed?" Thomas was utterly disappointed
in Jamie.
Jamie was left speechless by the counterargument.
Being a young man in his prime, he was naturally stronger than the housekeeper. He quickly got in his
car and headed straight for Cordelia's place. Half an hour later, Jamie arrived at Cordelia's doorstep
and rang the doorbell. Content bel0ngs to Nôvel(D)r/a/ma.Org.
Upon hearing the doorbell, Cordelia sprang from the couch to answer it. Seeing Jamie at the door, her
heart finally settled.
Ronan initially wondered who the first visitor to their new home could be. But when he saw Jamie, it all
made sense. No need to ask, it was Cordelia who told him where they lived.
Cordelia had been sitting there not for idle chatter with him but waiting for Jamie. She was afraid that if
the person at the door was him, he would turn Jamie away. Such foresight!
"You're here?" Cordelia asked, relieved.
"Yes, are you okay?" Jamie looked over Cordelia, relieved to see her unharmed. He followed Cordelia
inside.
Ronan, sitting in the living room, kept an eye on the entrance.
"Oh, Jamie and I need to talk," Cordelia said to Ronan, then pulled Jamie into her room.
She was terrified, and only now could her heart settle. "I was so scared, really scared," Cordelia
confessed, patting her chest.
"What happened?" Jamie asked.
Cordelia quietly told Jamie what had happened earlier, her fear that Ronan would harm her babies.
"Do you think I should tell him the children are his?" Cordelia asked Jamie.
Jamie thought for a moment, then said, "I think it might not be about you, probably about Kendra."
"Kendra?" Cordelia was surprised. "What does Kendra have to do with this?"
"I overheard my dad on the phone the other day. It seems like Kendra's child was aborted by someone
Ronan hired. Maybe it's about his father's business," Jamie whispered to Cordelia.
Cordelia immediately sat down on her bed, her gaze lost. She didn't like Kendra, that was true, and she
despised her brother before. But learning about his act of aborting someone else's child, she felt it was
too cruel. As a soon-to-be mother, Cordelia couldn't bear to hear such things; she was terrified of him.
She didn't want to tell Jamie about the babies anymore, so she changed the subject to work matters.
Jamie said it was the end of the year, and they were busy with a lot of things. Cordelia was pregnant,
and he was in the process of hiring a new accountant. "What are the requirements for the new
accountants?" Cordelia asked Jamie.
"At least a master's degree, with a CPA certificate," Jamie said, sitting by Cordelia's writing desk.
"Looks like with my qualifications, I wouldn't even be considered," Cordelia joked, but she felt a tinge of
bitterness. There were plenty of people with her qualifications. Although she was capable, she didn't
have much work experience and only held a bachelor's degree.
"Can you compare? There are many highly educated talents who still have to work for the rich kids."
Jamie comforted Cordelia.
Cordelia chuckled again. She looked at the time on her phone and was shocked to see that it was
already one in the morning. She had been chatting with Jamie for two hours. "Oh, it's so late. I've kept
you too long," Cordelia said, guilt-ridden.
"Don't worry, it's your first day in your new home. It's only right for me to check on you," Jamie casually
spun a pen that Cordelia had left on the writing desk.
Cordelia was using this pen to write in her diary earlier.
"That's it, it's late. I won't keep you any longer," Cordelia said. "You've dispelled my doubts."
"I hope you don't have any more," Jamie said.
Cordelia lowered her head. She was indeed more worried because of Ronan's character. He was too
ruthless.
"Oh, and remember, don't tell my brother about this," Cordelia cautioned Jamie.
Jamie looked deep into Cordelia's eyes. "Why shouldn't I tell your brother? Are you afraid he'll seek
revenge on Ronan? Afraid to bring trouble to Ronan?"
Cordelia took a step back. It was an instinctual reaction, she hadn't thought any deeper. "I didn't think
much about it, and you shouldn't either," Cordelia hastily said.
Jamie fell silent for a moment. "Cordelia, don't you know that instinctual reactions are the most genuine
emotions?"
Cordelia was stunned. Her lips trembled, but she couldn't utter a single word.
"I should go now." With that, Jamie opened the door to Cordelia's room and left.
