Chapter 2374
Chapter 2374
Clarice turned around, her eyes scanning the empty hallway as an icy chill ran down her spine.
She had heard someone calling her "Rosalind Gold", a name she had long since abandoned. That was a remnant of a past she believed she had put to rest for good. Yet now, it was resurfacing, threatening to drag her back into memories she had sworn to kill.
For years, she believed she had cut off all ties with her former self, but hearing the name she had carried for over two decades still triggered an instinctive response.
"Dr. Amaryllis!" At that moment, a man who appeared to be a director approached with a respectful smile, followed by two medical staff.
"I've prepared the latest batch of drugs. Should we administer it to the test subjects today?"
"How many times must I tell you?" Clarice's voice turned icy as she fixed her gaze on him." They are not test subjects. They are patients. Don't make it sound as if we're monsters."
The man chuckled and responded, "Of course, you're absolutely right!"
"By the way," Clarice added, her eyes narrowing slightly. "Did you see anyone suspicious while you were on your way here?"
The trio exchanged confused glances.
"Suspicious? No, Dr. Amaryllis. This place is tightly guarded-it's almost impossible for anyone unauthorized to sneak in."
Clarice let out a derisive snort. "Don't get complacent. We're in Savrow now, not Meridan. Better safe than sorry."
Meanwhile, Jace had also been summoned to the hospital to lend a hand.
As he walked forward with his usual stoic composure, he spotted a couple of medical staff wheeling a hospital bed in his direction. At first, he paid it little mind, but then a weak, frail voice reached his ears, emanating from the bed.
"Brother... Save me... Please... Save me..."
Jace's cold gaze dropped to the source of the voice.
On the bed lay a girl, deathly pale and trembling. Her thin arm, peeking out from the sheet, was covered in bruised and swollen needle marks.
His eyes narrowed, and he paused in his steps. The girl's tear-filled eyes locked onto his, brimming with despair and agony.
Jace had seen countless dead bodies in his life and even more people on the brink of death. But this girl's gaze struck him in a way that his cold soul could not ignore. It was like a dagger plunged into his chest.
Eventually, the girl, her face full of hopelessness, was wheeled away.
Jace grabbed one of the medical staff by the arm, his deep voice trembling slightly. "She's still alive, isn't she?"
"Barely." The staff member's response was harsh. "Dr. Amaryllis instructed us to deal with her as soon as possible."
Jace's brow furrowed as he asked, "Was it a relapse?"
"No, the drug trial failed," the staff member replied indifferently, as if they were discussing the weather. "But even if it hadn't, she's terminally ill. She'd die sooner or later anyway, so it's better to put her out of her misery now."
"Put her out of her misery?" Jace's fists clenched involuntarily, the veins on his hand bulging, mirroring the storm brewing in his mind.
He did not see himself as a virtuous man, but the inhumanity of these people scraped against the last shreds of his moral compass, grinding it to dust.
Just then, Clarice approached him, her tone as cold as ever. "I'll be meeting the Boss shortly. You're responsible for watching over that man tonight. This is a direct order from the Boss himself."
Jace stared at her, his expression dark and unreadable, as though he wanted to say something but ultimately held back.
At that moment, a male doctor came running toward them, clutching his neck and wincing in pain. "Dr. Amaryllis... I was attacked!"
Clarice's expression froze. "What happened?"
"This afternoon, I went out for a smoke," the man stammered, his face pale and lips tinged with blue from the cold. "Someone struck me from behind, and then... I don't remember anything! When I woke up, I was lying in the bushes. I almost froze to death!"
Jace's face remained impassive, though a flicker of intrigue danced in his dark eyes.
"Who attacked you? What did they look like?" Clarice demanded, her voice sharp. All content is © N0velDrama.Org.
"I... I didn't see..."
"Useless!"
"But... I think... It was a woman!"
Jace's gaze sharpened slightly, a ripple of surprise crossing his otherwise stoic expression.
A woman had dared to infiltrate this heavily guarded facility? Bold move. Did she not know the rules? Under the Grant's orders, any trespassers in the restricted zone only had one
outcome awaiting them-death.
