Chapter 79
Jasper Green thought he had the upper hand, only to suddenly find himself at a disadvantage. Obviously, his daughter was more seriously injured.
“Mr Silverton, are you openly favoring someone?” Jasper Green questioned in an unfriendly tone. It was time to break ties.Content (C) Nôv/elDra/ma.Org.
Elijah didn’t intend to escalate things, but he wasn’t afraid either.
“Like you, I’m just protective.” He gestured for Freya to come over.
Freya obediently walked towards Elijah, taking a seat by his side.
Jasper Green thought Elijah was arguing unreasonably. After all, Izzy Green was his biological daughter, a cherished jewel in his palm. What was Freya to him?
“Just a woman anyone can find, just a bit prettier. How can she compare to my daughter?”
Upon hearing this, Freyae’s heart clenched. Looking at someone else’s father and then at her own, she tried to relax her expression in that moment. But relaxation was elusive; instead, she became colder. It was heartfelt.
“I’m sorry,” Freya suddenly spoke up. Not because she was yielding, but because of the father in question. This was what a father should be like, right? Something she never experienced. Looking at Izzy Green at this moment, she envied her. She had a good father.
Perhaps Freya’s sudden change of attitude was too abrupt. Jasper Green and Izzy Green, father and daughter, clearly wore expressions of astonishment. Elijah turned to look at her. Freya seemed calm, a far cry from her usual self. How resilient she truly was, he understood.
Elijah reached for Freya’s hand, only to find it ice-cold.
Izzy Green thought she might be hearing things. “I didn’t hear you. Say it again.”
Freya looked at her, uttering each word, “I’m sorry.”
Given the apology, the Green father-daughter duo found it difficult to press further. After all, an apology had been made. Continuing to pursue the matter would make them seem unreasonable.
Jasper Green said, “Since you’ve apologized, it’s equivalent to admitting you hurt my daughter. However, we’re magnanimous people and won’t pursue this further. I hope it ends here.” He added, “The matter of you falling into the pit ends here too.”
Freya softly acknowledged. Jasper Green said, “Mr Silverton, we’ve disturbed you, but everything is resolved. If we have future business cooperation, I hope it will be as it was before.”
Elijah, expressionless, responded, “Naturally.”
With that, he called in his secretary. “See our guests out.”
The reception room door closed. Elijah then asked, “Why admit it?”
Freya, lifting her eyes, said, “Shouldn’t you be asking why I hit her?”
“I know it wasn’t you who hit her.” Elijah spoke with absolute certainty. His gaze darkened. “Don’t you trust me to make decisions for you?”
Freya shook her head. “No.”
“I’m tired.” Said she.
Elijah noticed her weary expression and suggested, “I have a rest area in my office. Go rest there for a while.”
Freya didn’t refuse. “Thank you.”
Elijah stood up, glancing at her. “You’re welcome.”
Freya followed him to the office. It was spacious, with a concealed door on the left that opened with a push. The room, seemingly simple, had everything-wardrobe, desk, and a private bathroom. Clean and tidy.
“Rest, and when I’m done, I’ll call you. We’ll go back together.”
Freya hummed in agreement. She lay down on the bed, covering herself. Staring at the ceiling, she said, “Izzy Green has a good father.”
It was a random comment, but Elijah grasped its meaning. He drew the curtains, darkening the room. As Elijah left the room, he hesitated by the bed before resuming his stride. The door closed gently.
Upon hearing the closing sound, Freya curled up. Her hand covered her abdomen, offering warmth to the child inside. The child’s existence gave her courage and strength. She closed her eyes.
“Dina,” walking out of the office, he addressed his secretary.
“Yes? Mr Silverton.”
“Find out who Freya met today and, especially, who hit Izzy Green.”
“Yes.” The secretary nodded.
“Go!”
Elijah returned to his office. In an unfamiliar place, Freya’s sleep was uneasy. After about an hour, she woke up, tidied the bed, and pulled the curtains, brightening the room.
Freya walked out, seeing Elijah at the desk piled with documents. Elijah wore only a white shirt; his suit and tie hung on a nearby rack. The collar of his shirt slightly open, revealing a long neck and faintly visible collarbones. He seemed to be facing a problem, occasionally furrowing his brows. Seriousness was tinged with meticulousness.
Freya saw him working for the first time. So, this was how serious he looked when working. Sensing her presence, Elijah looked up. Their eyes met. Freya looked away first.
“I…”
“Make me a cup of coffee.”
She was about to say she would leave, but Elijah instructed her to make coffee. After all, she had used his bed. A return favor was appropriate.
“Need sugar?” She asked.
“No.”
Freya left the office. Not familiar with the place and being a doctor, she didn’t understand the urgency of office workers. Those working on this floor were high-ranking company executives. All of them were serious and meticulous.
Freya searched slowly. Fortunately, the pantry was in an obvious location. She walked over, finding someone already making coffee. Seeing her unfamiliar face, the person asked, “New here?”
Freya smiled but didn’t reply.
“What do you need?” asked the woman.
“Coffee,” Freya said.
“Coffee is in the top cabinet, cups are in the bottom cabinet, and hot water is there.” The woman kindly pointed.
“Thank you.” Freya said and went on to prepare the coffee.
The woman had noticed Freya came out of Elijah’s office, so she held the coffee and didn’t leave, watching Freya.
“Are you close to Dina?”
Freya shook her head.
The woman sipped her coffee. “Then, are you close to Mr Silverton?”
Freya’s water-pouring action paused. She said, “Not really.”
“Really? I saw you coming out of his office.”
“I’m here to clean.” Said Freya.
The woman scrutinized her. “You’re so young, doing cleaning work?”
Freya replied, “I don’t have a degree, so…”
It wasn’t intentional lying; her identity was something no one knew. She dared not reveal it recklessly. In case it caused trouble for Elijah. She would be at fault then.
“Cleaners can also make coffee?” The woman doubted her explanation.
“The secretary is not here, so I was temporarily asked to make coffee.” She said.
The woman wanted to say something more, but Elijah appeared at the pantry door.
She immediately straightened up. “Mr Silverton,”
Elijah nodded slightly, but his gaze shifted to Freya, openly staring at her.
