Mayra thought she could’ve become Gordon’s wife.
“Gordon, I’ll marry you this time.”
Gordon’s heart skipped a beat.
“Okay.”
Mayra no longer responded as she had fallen asleep peacefully.
The heavy rain continued for quite a while, unsettling many people’s emotions.
The ceremony for George’s death anniversary finally came to an end. Many people would come to pay their respects annually.
Isabel wore a white dress with embroidered flower patterns. Due to the recent cold weather, she wore a shawl. Her long hair was pinned up with a hairpin, making her appear elegant yet dignified.
She approached Anderson with a coat and said, “These past few days have been hard on you. If you’re worried, you should go back to check on Mayra. After all, she’s still young, I can tell she relies on you a lot.”
Isabel loved two things about Anderson. The first was his seriousness about work, including his maturity and cool demeanor.
The second was his appearance when he smoked.
Whenever she approached him while he was smoking, he would extinguish the cigarette to prevent her from inhaling the smoke. Such a gesture would make her feel that Anderson cared for and liked
her.
After extinguishing the cigarette, Anderson waved his hand to disperse the smoke. His unfathomable gaze made it difficult for others to see through his thoughts. He simply said, “Have a good rest in your room.”
Isabel didn’t keep him. She only watched reluctantly as he left.
She wanted to ask him to stay but couldn’t bring herself to do so. She was aware of the rules. Men could never focus only on one person.
Sonia’s advice echoed in her mind again. “No matter how good his woman is, a
man would always be tempted by other women. Andy knows his boundaries. Neither Hailey nor that young lady by his side is more suited to be the Barlow family’s future matriarch than you.
“Isabel, remember, if Andy fools around with other women, I’ll deal with those women. Your status is legitimate. They’re the illicit ones.”
She added, “Back then, Andy’s grandpa had nine mistresses. I was his fifth mistress. Despite all the women around him, I survived it all! You just need to secure your position and leave the rest alone.”
At the warehouse of the Barlow Estate, a maid said, “She still hasn’t died. What a tough life she has!”
“Don’t let others hear you.”
The maid scoffed. “Look at her. No one would even care if she died.”
“She still has the nerve to see Mr. Anderson. Mr. Anderson has been home the whole time. If he had wanted to see her, he would have by now. She’s just like her shameless and despicable mother.
“Mrs. Barlow used to treat us so well. If she hadn’t funded my son’s medical fees, my son would’ve died long ago.”
“Mr. Anderson lost his mother at 12 years old. It was that despicable woman’s fault. How dare she show up at the Barlow Estate!”
“At the thought of how Mrs. Barlow didn’t live to see Mr. Anderson grow up, I can’t get over it.”
Hailey leaned meekly against the wall. She had gone two days and nights without food and water. As daylight approached, she was nearing her third day.
She didn’t know how much longer she could hold on. But she told herself that
she couldn’t die like this.
She had to hold on to prove to everyone that her mother wasn’t the murderer of the Manchester family members.
Upon hearing the voices outside, she endured the pain and tried to stand by leaning against the wall. It took her some effort to stand, and she kept falling repeatedly. Belongs to NôvelDrama.Org - All rights reserved.
As soon as she heard footsteps approaching, the door opened. Without the support of the iron door, Hailey fell forward.
A strong arm caught her. Upon seeing who it was, a flicker of emotion finally appeared on her expressionless face.
Anderson withdrew his hand. He looked at her as if he was watching a dying person struggling.
Hailey grabbed his hand weakly and knelt before him.
