Rewriting My Heart's Fate

Ethan walked over to the door as he spoke. When he reached the door, he didn't hesitate to open it.

Julia and Vivian stood just outside, looking conceited and contemptuous as usual.

"Mom, what are you doing here?" asked Ethan with a stiff smile.

"What now? Am I not welcome to see my own grandson?" Julia scoffed, her gaze falling on Zach in my arms.

I instinctively tightened my embrace of Zach and stared at Julia and Vivian warily.

"You've always looked down upon us," said Ethan, dubious. "Since when have you been so concerned about your grandson all of a sudden?"

"The boy is a Grayson. Of course, I'm concerned," Julia stated matter-of-factly. "I'm his grandmother. Am I not allowed to just carry him?"noveldrama

As she spoke, she reached for Zachary. Seeing this, I quickly stepped away from her so that Zachary was out of her reach. "No way. Zach's still so young."

"Why, you're quite impudent!" Julia spat, staring daggers at me. "How dare you behave like this before me! Believe it or not, I can take your son from you right away!"

"Mom, stop messing around!" Ethan roared, his tone firm as he stepped forward to stand between me and Julia. "Zach's my son. Have you asked me for permission before trying to take him away?" "Asking you for permission?" Julia scoffed. "My words mean business in the Grayson family. Why should I get your permission when he's my grandson?"

Julia held her head high and added, "Ethan, don't you forget that you wouldn't have come this far if I hadn't given birth to you."

"You're my mother, so of course, I respect you," said Ethan, helpless. "But Zach's still so young. Evelyn and I can't bear leaving him."

"Leave? Who said I'm asking you two to leave him?" Julia's laughter was cold. "I simply wanted to take him home and raise him there. You two couldn't even stop being lovey-dovey outside just now."

"No way!" I snapped. I just couldn't take it anymore. "Zach's my son. I won't let anyone take him away from me!"

"You" Julia was livid, and it showed on her face. I would've died under her sharp gaze if her eyes could shoot lasers.

"Evelyn!" she spat. "Don't you dare think you're so high and mighty just because you gave birth to Ethan's child! Listen up. Without the birth certificate, Zachary's considered an illegitimate child and can never be accepted into the Grayson family!"

My heart shattered at her words, and tears stung my eyes.

Vivian watched coldly from beside Julia with a satisfied smile playing on her lips. She said, "I told you. A vixen like her doesn't deserve to be Ethan's wife. She thinks she can seduse him and become rich and powerful just like that. How shameless!"

"Stop it!" Ethan bellowed. "Stop slandering Evelyn, or I won't let you go!"

His threat didn't work against Vivian because she sheered and said, "Ethan, do you really think you can save this bastard from harm all alone? Just wait. Someday, I'll make you lose everything, and I'll make Evelyn wish that she hadn't been born!"

And with that, she turned to leave. Her long, lustrous hair swayed behind her as she walked.

Julia glowered at Ethan. "Ethan, I'll give you one last chance," she warned. "It's either you get together with Vivian, or I'll have you hand my grandson over to me. Don't blame me for what happens next if you don't!"

She left right after that, and the living room was thrown into dreaded silence.

I leaned against the wall and slid to the floor. At this point, my tears just couldn't stop falling.

Ethan sat slumped over the couch with his head in his hands. After a moment of silence, he lifted his gaze, and I could see that his eyes were bloodshot.

"Evelyn, I'm sorry," he croaked, his voice hoarse. "I failed to protect you and Zach."

Hastily, I wiped my tears dry and forced a smile to comfort him despite how horrible I felt. "It's not your fault. I dragged you down."

"I could take Zach with me and leave," I suggested. "You can head back to the Grayson residence. You shouldn't be at odds with your family because of me "

"No!" Ethan snapped before I was done speaking. He raised his head abruptly, revealing his dangerously dark gaze.
