Tasting The Enemy

Chapter 43

Narration Alpha Laiken

Alpha Laiken shrugged into his coat. He had to make a trip to Medium Cove to ensure everything was fine. The time was drawing near for when the veil between the moon and the earth was thinner than ever. His plan had been in motion for the last twenty years and soon it would finally be a reality.

The door to his office opened and closed shut.

“You made a mistake and you know it, Laiken,” Avena snapped.

Avena had been his number two for years. She met him while he still had Bianca, a young Alpha with dreams bigger than the land he lived on. After Bianca died Avena wasn’t just a source of magical advice, she was his rock, his confidant and his comfort.

She could also be a pain in his ass.

“What did you want me to do, lock her in her room? Elaine’s headstrong she wouldn’t have stopped.”

“Maybe if you had a better grip on your children then you wouldn’t have had anything to worry about.”

Laiken chuckled. “Don’t think this distracts from the fact that you messed up. You lied to me, Avena.”

“I didn’t lie to you. She shouldn’t have gotten her powers at all but she decided to be a slut and find her fated mate.”

“Her powers aren’t the problem now but her fated mate. He won’t let anything happen to her.”

Avena brushed her nails on her skirt and blew on them. “That isn’t a problem, Laiken. How hard is it to get rid of a wolf?”

“It isn’t as easy as you think, Avena.”

“Sounds like a challenge. After all these years you still underestimate me?”

Laiken groaned. He grabbed his car keys from the table but Avena blocked his path. She was at least a foot shorter than him but size didn’t intimidate her.

“What would you do without me? Nothing would work around here that’s for sure.”

“Should I fire you and we see how well I do without you?” Laiken snapped.

Avena smirked and ran her hand up his chest. She let it rest over his beating heart.

“Go ahead.”

Laiken sighed heavily. He picked up her hand and pressed it against his lips. Avena watched the process with intense eyes.

“What do you want? Name it.”

“I want to be taken more seriously. I’m your number two, but for how long?”

Laiken sucked in a breath. He knew what she was asking and considering how their relationship had progressed over the years it wasn’t unnatural but Avena was a witch something his pack would never allow. If the wolf council knew he mated with a witch and had a hybrid spawn, there would be consequences but with his plan he didn’t fear those consequences.

“Can we talk about this later?” He tried to brush passed her but Avena was dead set in her ways.

“You would have considered if it was Gail, wouldn’t you? Of all your children’s Mothers you decided to keep in contact with Gail, why?”

Laiken’s blood boiled. He may have valued Avena but he didn’t owe her any explanations.

“That doesn’t matter. We have bigger things to worry about!”

“Yes, your glorious plan. If it weren’t for me all the wolves in this town wouldn’t have slowed down. There won’t be an army left to fight you when the day comes!”

“What are you talking about?” Laiken asked, bewildered.

“The wolf enhancers! I’m distributing them. They’ve ravished the Blood Moon pack by now. I made sure to hit their army.”

Laiken shook his head and gripped her shoulders.

“You did all that? You do realize some of my army has been hurt by this.”

“There had to be sacrifices along the way. See how committed I am to do, Laiken?”

“I never doubted that.” He looked away.

Avena was a powerful witch and it was true without her his plans would have been a lot harder. He squeezed her hand and sighed heavily but he held her stare to show her how serious he was.

“Fine. Avena, be my Luna and rule by my side.”

The corners of her mouth lifted. Finally, she thought.

“I would want nothing more.”

“Good.” Laiken adjusted his coat. “We’ll talk details later but now I have to go to Medium Cove.”

Avena frowned. “To do what?”

“To see my son, what else?”

“Your boys are here, Laiken,” Avena said in confusion.

“Hmm, there are some secrets that even you don’t know.”

Avena gripped his arm. “You have to be joking. You have another child?”

“Relax, he was born before you came into my life I didn’t think you needed to know about him.”

Avena gawked at him in disbelief. Though, she shouldn’t have been surprised he was a man capable of anything. If her suspicions were correct the birth of this son had nothing to do with an affair or love. It all had to do with his grand scheme.

“Are you coming?” Laiken asked.

Avena nodded. “Let me get my coat.”

Laiken smirked. “We’re going to do incredible things. It’s all a matter of time.”Content is © 2024 NôvelDrama.Org.
