Chapter 307
Chapter 307:.
“Stop drinking.”
Hayden pushed the glass away. As he got ready to pay the bill, Leon blocked it and paid it with his card.
“I should buy you dinner, I won’t let a girl pay for me.”
Hayden wore a wry expression and didn’t know what to say. He asked a waiter to help Leon into the car and drove him to the hotel.
She looked in the rearview mirror at Leon, who was slumped in the back seat mouthing red-faced nonsense. She shook her head, “You know, I reckon you’re not a very good drinker.”
Leon clutched a pillow tightly and muttered, “I promise, Chris. I won’t drink any more wine.”
Hayden sighed.
A few moments later, they arrived at the hotel. The waiters helped Leon upstairs and Hayden opened the door for him with the key from his pocket.
“Leave it on the bed, thanks.” Hayden told the waiters and turned on the light.
After walking around the room, he closed the curtain and kept the thermostat at 26℃. Finally, she filled him a glass of hot water by the bedside.
She knew that celebrities had backgrounds that varied from person to person.
Actually, what Leon said didn’t surprise her, although it sounded dramatic at first. She thought he had told her the truth; no one would waste time making up a story like that.
Then she left the hotel, ready to wait for a cab on the side of the road. Still concentrating on Leon’s story, when she caught a glimpse of Joseph, she could hardly believe he was there.
Joseph got out of a cab wearing the black coat she’d pulled out of his closet in the morning and, as he stood across the street, Hayden wasn’t quite sure that guy was Joseph.
She was about to run across the sidewalk, but then she was stopped by a policeman who warned her of the traffic light with a whistle. As she was standing still and waiting, she pulled out her phone to call Joseph.
However, she looked up and saw a woman getting out of the same cab and walking with Joseph toward the commercial building.
She continued to call Joseph. Although they were far away, Hayden could clearly see him pull out his phone and the woman look at him curiously.
Then their phones connected.
But Hayden decided to put it to the test. Joseph called her several times on the phone before she answered.
“Joseph, where are you?”
Joseph answered calmly and firmly, as usual, “I’m still working at the company. What happened?”
Hayden held the phone more firmly, “Nothing, but why do I hear the cars rattling?”
“Oh, I actually went downstairs to get food.”
“You haven’t had dinner yet?”.
“Yes.”
“How about I drive down there to pick you up? It’s really late, honey. It’s time to rest.” With her fingernails almost sinking into her palm, she tried unsuccessfully to come up with a reasonable excuse for Joseph.
“No, don’t do that. You should sleep early because I’ll be home late, I’m quite busy and I have to go.”
Then he hung up the phone without hesitation.
Hayden stood stiffly with the phone still to his ear, staring at the two people across the road.
He didn’t usually think badly of Joseph, but this time he had lied to her. She knew that whoever tells a lie must be trying to hide something, and what he wanted to hide from her was an enigma to her.
That the traffic police blew the whistle announcing permission to pass on the highway drove it out of her mind. So Hayden hurried through the crowd and almost ran under the biting wind to follow Joseph’s direction.
The World Trade Building was so big that he had no idea where to go. He stood in the doorway, watching the elevators moving with flutter.
Her phone was still vibrating in her pocket, which surprised her. Noticing the people around her paying attention, she sobered up and answered it immediately.
“Hayden! Where are you, are you still in N-City?”. It was Alayna.
“Yes.” She frowned and looked around to find Joseph.noveldrama
“Well, I must tell you something.” Alayna said urgently, “Kevin informed me that Joseph found Noah’s birth mother.”
Hayden’s face paled visibly. He couldn’t believe the news and asked in a high-pitched voice, “What?”
“I don’t believe it either. You said Noah was your son, but Kevin told me yesterday that Joseph found Noah’s mother and already met her. The woman introduced herself to Joseph and expected to meet Noah.”
“But that’s impossible!” Hayden was completely confused. “She must be an imposter.”
“Why? Maybe she told the truth.” Alayna doubted, “You can’t identify the man from that night just by a pendant. Kevin told me Joseph’s pendant has been missing for some time and he didn’t even know when he lost it.”
Holding his head, Hayden’s thoughts were like a whirlwind.
“No, Noah is my son.”
He claimed Noah was the baby taken from him because of a jewelry store clerk’s ordeal.
However, if the pendant had been lost before the night they had sex, she could hardly prove the man was Joseph.
“Hayden, don’t worry, have you done a DNA test?”.
“A DNA test?” Hayden gradually calmed down, “Oh yes, I still have the report.”
The test was done by Addison, who wanted to check the relationship between Hayden and Joseph and the result confirmed that Stella was Joseph’s daughter. She completely forgot about it due to the upheaval.
“Now I agree with you, that woman told a lie.” Alayna took a deep breath, “Hayden, be careful, I feel something bad is going to happen. Kevin said Joseph had his assistant look for Noah’s birth mother, but he also discovered some problems with the surrogacy.”
“What problems?”
“I don’t know, Kevin refused to tell me for fear they would have a bad reaction.”
Hayden pondered for a while and had a hard time accepting it.
Joseph may have already realized that the girl who was to be the surrogate had actually been substituted. However, before he unearthed the whole truth, a woman suddenly appeared announcing that she was the one who had given birth to Noah.
Everyone seemed to be pulled in a direction that led to a more intricate labyrinth.
They failed to get a grip on their lives as if there was someone behind the curtain manipulating all things.
