The Contracted Ever After (Cordelia and Ronan)

Chapter 248

Chapter 248

Exiting PrimeBuild Contractors, Cordelia's mood took a nosedive.

It was barely three in the afternoon when they pulled up near her home.

"Let's grab a drink," Cordelia suggested, spotting a Starbucks near the entrance of their residential

area. She turned to her companion, Janice.

The two of them got out of the car.

After ordering Cordelia a steaming hot milk, Janice ushered her to a seat by the window. "Sit tight,

Cordelia. I'm heading over to the farmer's market to pick up some groceries. Don't wander off, alright?"

With that, Janice was off.

Stirring her milk, Cordelia couldn't hide the fatigue in her eyes. Being questioned by Hunter had

knocked her off balance. Resting her forehead in her hand, she looked forlorn and somewhat stubborn.

She knew it wasn't just Hunter who doubted her. The voices questioning her in the company chat still

rang in her ears. Those words probably echoed the thoughts of her colleagues.

Ronan finished work and drove to Starbucks.

"Isn't that your wife in the café?" Emerson, sitting next to Ronan, asked.

"Yes, it is," Ronan confirmed.

"What's happened?" Emerson noticed Cordelia's hand on her forehead and the listless stirring of her

drink. She seemed exceptionally downcast.

"No idea. Let's go," Ronan instructed the driver. The car drove straight into the residential area.

Cordelia finished her milk, trying to pull herself together. She recalled how her application to Lumos

Enterprises Audit Department had been rejected by HR but approaching Wyatt directly had yielded a

different outcome.

Brooklyn's words resonated with her. "It's easier to deal with the devil you know than the devil you

don't."

Cordelia found the number of the PrimeBuild Contractors' Chairman, Will, online and dialed it straight

away. He claimed to be very busy and told Cordelia to bring her matters to Hunter. Cordelia didn't

mention her unsuccessful encounter with Hunter.

Hearing the phone line disconnect, Cordelia felt even more disheartened. To Will, she was just another

salesperson from a small firm, a nuisance as most bosses would view it.

Before Cordelia could finish her milk, Janice returned.

"Let's go," Cordelia said.

"But you haven't finished your milk, Cordelia," Janice observed. There was still more than half left in the

cup.

"Forget it. I'm not in the mood."

Upon arriving home, Cordelia was surprised to see Emerson there. She didn’t know when Ronan had

gotten off work.

Janice went into the kitchen to cook.

"Mr. Emerson, what brings you here?" Cordelia had a high regard for Emerson due to their past

teacher-student relationship.

"When are you due?" Emerson asked, looking at Cordelia's belly.

"May. But the doctor said twins often come early." Cordelia chatted with Emerson while sitting on the

couch, holding a cushion in her lap.

Ronan went to the kitchen. Cordelia thought he was checking out what was for dinner and didn’t think

much of it.

"What happened today?" Ronan asked Janice.

Janice was chopping vegetables as she replied, "In the morning, Cordelia went to the environmental

place and came back in high spirits. But after visiting another company in the afternoon, she seemed

upset."

"PrimeBuild Contractors?" Ronan inquired.

Janice paused in her chopping. "Yes, I think that's the one."

Ronan returned to his bedroom and made a few phone calls. When he reemerged, he had changed

into his lounge wear.

Everyone gathered at the table.

"Ronan, I had no idea you had a place here. You really have a few cards up your sleeve," Emerson

remarked, looking around the house. "This place is ideal to keep a mistress."

"You don’t know the half of it," Ronan retorted.

Cordelia kept eating, not paying much attention to their banter. Then, she asked Emerson, "Mr.

Emerson, what's your educational background?"

"Me? A PhD. Is that too low to be your teacher?"

"A PhD? That's impressive!" Cordelia nearly dropped her chopsticks in surprise. Owned by NôvelDrama.Org.

It seemed that nowadays, a bachelor's degree was hardly worth a dime. They were a dime a dozen.
